American comedian and actor Chris Rock has opened up about personal challenges that affected his 20-year marriage to his ex-wife, Malaak Compton-Rock, admitting that his excessive consumption of sexually explicit content contributed to him not being the husband he wanted to be.
Rock made the revelation in a GQ interview published on Tuesday, November 3, while reflecting on his 2016 divorce and his efforts to rebuild his life.
Speaking about the 12-year gap between directing his films Top Five and Misty Green, the comedian explained that his divorce, financial difficulties and personal circumstances contributed to the lengthy break.
“I got divorced. Nobody has a successful divorce, so that takes time,” he said, adding that he had to rebuild his finances through stand-up comedy tours.
Reflecting on his marriage, Rock admitted that he had not been a good husband, partly because he spent too much time watching adult content.
He also revealed that he stopped the habit about five or six years ago.
The entertainer said the experiences had humbled him and made him reflect on his past behaviour.
“I tested my powers. I definitely realized I wasn’t God or anywhere near him, and I was severely humbled, as I should have been,” he said.
Rock had previously spoken about his struggles with adult content and infidelity in his 2018 comedy special, where he discussed how his behaviour affected his marriage.
He and Malaak divorced in 2016 after 20 years of marriage.
