UK celebrity can't maintain anonymity in defilement case - Judge Rules

A judge has ruled against a UK celebrity’s attempt to remain anonymous over allegations of misconduct involving girls and young women, despite arguments from his lawyers that identification could put him at risk of suicide.

The celebrity cannot yet be named while a potential appeal is considered, according to The Sun. He denies allegations that he used his fame and status over several years to pursue inappropriate relationships with numerous girls and young women.

His legal team had sought to prevent ITN and The Guardian from identifying him, arguing that publication could expose him to a “trial by media” and create a serious risk that he would harm himself. The lawyers stressed that raising concerns about his mental health did not amount to an admission of guilt.

Lawyers representing the two news organisations argued that treatment could reduce the risk of suicide. They also maintained that the allegations were sufficiently important to warrant public scrutiny. Mr Justice Matthew Nicklin described the case as “difficult and important”, emphasising the need for the court to assess the evidence fairly.

The judge had previously warned members of the public against attempting to identify the celebrity while reporting restrictions remained in place, saying breaches could result in imprisonment. Those restrictions continue to prevent publication of his identity while the possibility of an appeal is considered.
