Elon Musk’s futuristic cybertruck rolls toward exit

Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas factory around the middle of 2027 to make room for increased manufacturing of its Cybercab robotaxi, chief executive Elon Musk said on Friday, November 6.

“Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production,” Musk wrote on X.

He did not clarify whether Tesla would move Cybertruck production elsewhere or discontinue the vehicle entirely. He also gave no details about how the decision would affect outstanding orders. Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill said in a separate post that the pickup “was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab”.

“Thanks to everyone who contributed to making the future (look) like the future,” he added. Some Tesla supporters expressed disappointment on X, prompting Musk to reassure owners that the existing Cybertruck fleet “will be around for a long time”.

The angular, stainless-steel pickup became closely associated with Musk’s public image and political activities, particularly his role leading the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency. Some owners reported harassment and vandalism as controversy surrounding Musk grew.

Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck in November 2019. Musk said it attracted 250,000 preorders within days. Production was initially scheduled to begin in 2021 but suffered repeated delays. Customer deliveries eventually started in late 2023.

Tesla designed its Texas production lines for a planned annual capacity of 250,000 trucks, although sales have remained well below that level. As US demand weakened, the company expanded deliveries overseas, entering South Korea in November 2025 and the United Arab Emirates in January.

Tesla does not report Cybertruck revenue separately. The pickup is included in its “other models” category, which represents a small share of overall sales. The vehicle has also faced multiple recalls and complaints about build quality.

The Cybercab, which will take over production space at the Texas factory, is a two-seat vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals. Tesla unveiled it in October 2024, began production in April and started offering paid rides in Austin in September through its existing Robotaxi service.

The vehicle is central to Musk’s effort to position Tesla as an artificial intelligence and robotics business. Its prospects depend, however, on the company delivering fully driverless technology, which it has yet to demonstrate at scale.
