Foreigner stops turtle from being sold to potential eater in Lagos

An emotional act of compassion has reportedly unfolded near Eko Hotel, Lagos, after a foreign man intervened when he encountered men allegedly attempting to sell sea turtles.

A social media user, Folarin revealed that the foreigner refused to stand by and watch the animals be traded. He reportedly pleaded with those involved, calling on bystanders and police officers present to recognise that the creatures deserved protection.

When his appeals did not immediately succeed, he reportedly made a remarkable decision: he paid the men for the turtles, not to own them, but to secure their release. With the assistance of a police van, the turtles were reportedly transported back to the sea and released into their natural habitat.

Folarin wrote:

"Today, I witnessed something that genuinely broke my heart but also restored a little of my faith in humanity.

While leaving Eko Hotel, I came across some men trying to sell a sea turtle in the middle of the road, as though it were just another ordinary item of trade. What happened next was both heartbreaking and inspiring.

A foreign man stopped, determined not to let it happen. He shouted, pleaded, and did everything he could to make the people around him, including the uniformed police officers present, understand that this was wrong. Sadly, it seemed like his voice was the only one speaking up for a creature that couldn’t speak for itself. But he didn’t give up.

Eventually, he paid the men for the turtle, not to own them, but to give them another chance at life. With the help of a police van, the turtles were taken back to the sea and released into their natural home.

I couldn’t help but think: What if nobody had stopped? What if nobody cared? The ocean is their home. Let them live free."
