Democrats have won control of the U.S. Senate after a net gain of four seats, securing at least a 51-49 majority in midterm elections, ending the Republicans' majority in the upper chamber of Congress.
The Associated Press reported on Wednesday, November 4, that Democrats had won control of the Senate after flipping several Republican-held seats in key states, delivering a significant setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
The victories include Democratic wins in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Ohio, while the party also retained several seats it previously held.
Before the election, Republicans controlled the Senate with a 53-47 majority, meaning Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to take control.
Democrats also secured a major victory in Texas, where James Talarico defeated his Republican challenger, ending decades of Republican dominance in statewide Senate elections.
The change in control is expected to have significant implications for Trump's remaining two years in office.
With Democrats now holding the Senate majority, they will have greater influence over legislative proceedings, committee investigations, and the confirmation of presidential nominees, including federal judges.
