Media personality Morayo Brown has recounted how she and her colleagues narrowly escaped when Television Continental (TVC) was set ablaze during the EndSARS unrest in Lagos in October 2020.
Speaking about the incident, Morayo recalled encouraging her fellow presenters to speak freely about the situation in the country during their programme the morning after the unrest escalated.
She explained that while two presenters joined remotely because they were on the Island, she and another colleague reported to the studio on the Mainland.
According to her, they were still broadcasting live when suspected hoodlums entered the station.
“We were live. The moment we tried to open the door of the studio to get out, we saw they had already entered the newsroom. They were already with their torches, with the fire already,” she recalled.
Morayo said they barricaded the studio door with chairs and attempted to escape through another exit, only to discover that the situation outside was also dangerous.
She explained that they began making calls for help, including contacting the Commissioner of Police, as they feared for their lives.
The broadcaster also recalled how her husband tried to reach her despite people fleeing the area.
She said her elderly grandmother-in-law, who was 98 at the time, and her mother-in-law also left home and walked towards the station after watching the incident unfold on television.
According to Morayo, the women walked past people causing the unrest without being harmed as they desperately tried to find her.
Reflecting on the experience, she said the incident reminded her that Nigerians have a shared stake in the country, regardless of where they work.
“The experience of that day, our own experience that we almost lost our lives, myself, my colleague, the crew members and staff members, should not be undermined. Very painful, but we thank God for life,” she said.
