A newborn baby girl survived approximately 20 hours inside a shopping bag after she was allegedly abandoned in a bush in Oakford, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were canvassing the area following the discovery of the abandoned infant when they established a possible timeline of events.
According to witnesses, a woman was seen entering the bush at approximately 14:00 on Monday, October 12, 2026 carrying a Woolworths shopping bag.
The sighting did not raise suspicion, as people frequently discarded rubbish in the area.
At approximately 09:45 on Tuesday, October 13, Reaction Unit South Africa’s (RUSA) Headquarters received a call for assistance after a couple discovered the newborn.
The couple reportedly followed the sound of a baby crying before locating the infant inside the shopping bag.
The pair used scissors to cut it open and found the newborn wrapped in a black T-shirt.
Her umbilical cord had been cut but was left untied. The placenta was also inside the bag.
Members of RUSA attended the scene.
RUSA Paramedics examined the baby and found her to be in good health.
The paramedics transported the baby girl to a local government hospital for medical attention.
Authorities were also informed of the discovery.
Reaction Officers interviewed residents in an effort to identify the mother.
During these enquiries, a female informed First Responders that she had witnessed a woman discarding the bag in the bush yesterday afternoon.
Enquiries are ongoing with Officers seeking information about women in the area who may have recently given birth.
