Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed political forecasts made by former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi regarding the 2027 presidential election, alleging that fewer than 200 people attended Amaechi's recent town hall meeting in Cross River State.
Wike made the remarks on Tuesday during a media chat while responding to questions about whether an emerging opposition ticket involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Amaechi was generating concern among supporters of President Bola Tinubu.
Recounting statements attributed to Amaechi during the gathering, Wike noted that the former Minister of Transportation argued Atiku was positioned to secure victory based on the geopolitical background of major contenders.
"I watched Amaechi, he had a town hall meeting in Cross River. I can tell you the numbers not up to 200 people," Wike stated.
According to the FCT minister, Amaechi informed attendees that the election outcome was already determined based on the candidates' regions of origin.
"He said, 'Atiku is from where? North. Tinubu is from where? South. Obi is from where? South. Donald Duke is from where? South. Atiku has won the election,'" Wike recounted.
The minister questioned the rationale of a vice-presidential candidate making such assertions to supporters at a public forum.
"How can a vice-presidential candidate go to a town hall meeting, standing and telling his supporters, 'Do you know how this election has been won?'" Wike asked.
Addressing whether Amaechi's premise relied on the idea that a sole major northern candidate holds an advantage over multiple southern competitors, Wike pointed to the dynamics of the 2023 general election.
"In 2023, Atiku ran, Obi ran, Tinubu ran, who won?" Wike noted, adding that electoral dynamics in 2027 will not necessarily align with previous political cycles. "I've always told you people, 2027 will be totally different from 2023," he added.
