A man has lost his life after falling from the Goliath rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia theme park.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:58 p.m. local time, on Monday, October 12, when several people were reported injured, and one person died, the Cobb County Police Department said in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today,” a Six Flags Over Georgia spokesperson said in a statement to PEOPLE. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest’s family, friends, and loved ones. We are also providing support to the guests and team members affected.”

The park said its team and local authorities responded immediately and that it was cooperating fully with the investigation.

The spokesperson added that the park would not share additional details at this time out of respect for the family’s privacy.

Witnesses described seeing the man fall from the coaster, according to WXIA. One witness told the outlet that the man appeared in photos taken during the ride before falling and striking the coaster several times.

“He was in our pictures,” the witness told the outlet. “He fell and hit the car three different times.”

The witness also said the man struck other riders before falling onto the roof of a haunted house attraction below, according to WXIA.

A couple who were riding the coaster also told the outlet they witnessed the man fall from his car and hit parts of the ride multiple times. The woman described the frightening shift from enjoying the ride to witnessing the incident, while both said workers had checked their safety harnesses before the coaster began moving.

Mableton Mayor Michael Owens also addressed the incident in a statement to WSB-TV, expressing condolences to the man’s loved ones.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident at Six Flags Over Georgia today,” Owens said. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the individual’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Owens said Mableton Public Safety Director Dr. Kerry Stallings was coordinating with Cobb County police and park security as officials responded. He also thanked the personnel involved and said the city would continue supporting coordination with the appropriate authorities.

“Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from commenting further at this time,” Owens said.
