Nene Aderibigbe, mother of Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, has expressed concern about the influence of social media on members of Generation Z, saying it has affected their ability to think independently and recognise their own abilities.
Speaking in a video shared online, Aderibigbe said she worried about the younger generation because many appeared to rely heavily on other people's opinions rather than developing their own ideas.
She recalled an encounter with one of her children, who questioned whether something she had said amounted to “fake life”, and used the experience to highlight what she believes is the influence of social media on young people's thinking.
Aderibigbe urged young people to spend more time away from their phones, reflect on their lives and make use of their creativity and individual abilities.
She encouraged them to take time to meditate, think through their plans and seek God's guidance rather than relying entirely on what they see online.
She also reminded them that they already possess the abilities and potential they need to succeed, urging them to put their minds to productive use.
