Two officers of the Nasarawa State Police Command have been detained at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for allegedly detaining two young travellers and framing one of them to extort N150,000 for his release.
NPF Complaint Response Unit disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
According to the statement, the action was in response to a viral video showing the armed officers attached to the Ado Area Command engaging in an altercation with the travellers returning from a wedding, and heading for the airport to return to Lagos State.
“The officers captured in the viral video from Ado Area Command, Nasarawa State, have been identified and presently at the @PoliceNG_CRU Force Headquarters, Abuja, today, 5th November 2026, for an interview in connection with the ongoing investigation,” the statement read.
"However, information reaching the Unit indicates that the team leader, Insp. Sani Mikailu, reportedly passed away under circumstances yet to be established, two days ago.
"Consequently, only two of the officers appeared for the scheduled interview. In the interim, the two officers have been detained pending the conclusion of the investigation and further directives from the Inspector-General of Police.
“The investigation remains ongoing, and the Unit will submit its findings and recommendations for the consideration of the IGP as soon as practicable.”
According to the explanation made in the viral video, the officers stopped their vehicle for a stop-and-search, drove one of them to an isolated location, and dispossessed him of his phone and drove away from the scene with the victim.
The friend was later said to have gone to the officers’ station with a lawyer and met the DPO who stated that he didn’t see a mark on his face, suggesting the officers would have dealt with him.
The DPO thereafter allegedly demanded a N100,000 bribe to secure the victim’s bail as the officers had allegedly presented weed to the DPO, claiming it was found on him.
He also demanded additional N50,000 for fuel in the car used to drive the victim to the station.
The victim was said to have rejected writing a statement to implicate himself, prompting the officers to allegedly write a statement by themselves, stating that drug was found in his possession.
