A Nigerian woman has criticised the country's level of deprivation, arguing that Nigerians have become accustomed to celebrating things that are considered ordinary in other parts of the world.
In a video circulating online, she questioned why people make a big deal out of acquiring items such as iPhones and luxury cars, often sharing them on social media as major achievements.
She cited the ongoing social media competition over who owns the latest iPhone, wondering why purchasing a phone should attract so much attention.
According to her, people in other countries can easily afford such items because their systems work, while luxury cars are sometimes used as taxis.
She also criticised the culture of using material possessions to intimidate others, saying many Nigerians feel pressured to show off their wealth to prove they are better off than others.
The woman further blamed the situation on the pressure to maintain a certain image, particularly in Lagos, where she said people who do not fit particular social expectations can feel sidelined.
She argued that the country's tolerance for substandard living also allows politicians to present basic provisions, such as hospital beds and motorcycle tyres, as major achievements.
“We are so used to substandard living that any little thing now becomes like a big achievement,” she said, adding that Nigeria still had a long way to go.
