A domestic gas explosion claimed the lives of a 39-year-old Nigerian woman, Amarachi Georgina Mmadu and her 18-month-old son, Akachukwu.
The victims' brother and uncle, Promise Mmadu, announced their passing in an obituary shared on Facebook on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Mother and son will be laid to rest on Tuesday, October 13 in Ikeduru, Imo State.
According to him, the tragic incident occurred in September 2026.
In a post he made two weeks after the incident, Promise attributed the tragedy to preventable human error and negligence on the part of the gas vendor, and urged for stricter safety measures.
“Cooking gas k!lled my sister and son. Since last 2 weeks, my family has been in a state of agony. We tried everything within our human power to save my second sister and her son, but sadly, despite all our efforts, they succumbed to their injuries. What happened to my sister was a result of human error that should never have happened. If only Nigeria were a place where people took other people's safety seriously. Gas vendors should understand that the safety of their customers should be their utmost concern. If only the person who refilled her gas cylinder was observant enough, my sister and her son might not be lying in a mortuary today,” he wrote.
“Two lives have been lost because of an error that could have been prevented. Please, let us take safety seriously. When dealing with cooking gas, negligence can cost lives. Someone's life may depend on how careful you are. My sister and her son did not deserve to d!e this way.”
