Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has advised the club regarding the future of manager Michael Carrick at Old Trafford, urging the executive board to avoid a hasty dismissal.
Manchester United have struggled in recent weeks, failing to secure a victory in their last six matches across all competitions, a run that includes three defeats, and leaving the club in 13th position in the Premier League standings.
Ten Hag, who won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his tenure at Old Trafford, argued that established structures and time are critical factors for long-term progression. He warned that dismissing Carrick would be a mistake driven by public emotion rather than sound strategy.
In an interview with The Athletic, Ten Hag said: "The leadership, you need their competence, you need the right strategy. What is your identity? What are the work methods? You need the right structures and quality people. Then you need time.
"Terminating his employment would not be the solution. Absolutely not. Supporters will make this demand should results fail to improve, it originates from emotional reaction. Rational decision-making must be maintained.
"He demonstrated commendable coaching abilities at Middlesbrough and throughout last season. Therefore, allow him to execute his plan. I believe he has a capable coaching team."
Carrick signed a two-year contract as permanent manager in May following a successful interim spell after the departure of Rúben Amorim
