‘War is back in vogue,’ Pope Leo laments as he calls on world leaders to safeguard the human and civil rights of all

Pope Leo XIV lamented on Friday, Jan. 9, that war was “back in vogue” as his home country, the United States flexes its military muscles.

In a New Year’s message to diplomats at the Vatican, Leo lamented the weakness of multilateralism, saying dialogue was being replaced by a “diplomacy based on force”.

He said rising tensions in the Caribbean and Pacific were “cause for serious concern”, particularly in Venezuela, where US forces recently seized the president.

He was speaking just hours after US President Donald Trump said land operations against drug cartels were on the way following maritime attacks in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

Leo issued an appeal “to respect the will of the Venezuelan people, and to safeguard the human and civil rights of all”, following Trump’s suggestion the US could effectively control Venezuela and its vast oil reserves for years.

The Catholic Pontiff warned that the principle established after the Second World War by which countries cannot use force to violate the borders of others “has been completely undermined”.

Diplomacy based on dialogue “is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force, by either individuals or groups of allies”.

“War is back in vogue and a zeal for war is spreading,” he said.

The pope added that peace was being “sought through weapons as a condition for asserting one’s own dominion”.

“This gravely threatens the rule of law, which is the foundation of all peaceful civil coexistence,” he said.

The Pope said adhering to international law was “a commitment that states have made”, and it “must always prevail over the ambitions of belligerents”.

He termed the destruction of hospitals, energy infrastructure, homes and places essential to daily life “a serious violation” of international humanitarian law.

Leo urged the international community to remember that protecting human dignity and the sanctity of life “always counts for more than any mere national interest”, he said.

The pontiff pointed to the “weakness of multilateralism” as “a particular cause for concern”.

He said its purpose was to provide a place where people could meet and talk, modelled on the ancient Roman Forum or medieval town square.

However, he pointed out that it is difficult to talk “when words lose their connection to reality, and reality itself becomes debatable and ultimately incommunicable”.

“Rediscovering the meaning of words is perhaps one of the primary challenges of our time,” he said.

Leo also warned of the “danger of returning to the race of producing ever more sophisticated new weapons”, particularly those that use artificial intelligence.

Recalling ongoing conflicts around the world, the Pope repeated his support for a two-state solution in the Middle East, and lamented rising violence in the occupied West Bank.

“Sadly, there has been an increase in violence in the West Bank against the Palestinian civilian population, which has the right to live in peace in its own land,” he said.

It's all about political correctness. Even the pope is doing political correctness. There's one important thing you learn as you age, which is, you don't know how seriousness a situation is until you're the one affected. The reason most Nigerian christians or any affected person in the world will stand by Israel to support their stance is the same reason the Nigerian and the world's affected masses will stand by Trump's action in Venezuela. The actual reason is EXPERIENCE! When you experience extremely bad leadership to the point of extreme security and financial incapacitation, you'll understand why Venezuelans, and even those from different parts of the world who have the same concerns in their various countries, were happy about Trump's decisions. The same thing is applicable in Israel. For example, Nigerian christians understands Israel actions better because they are in their shoes and they know how brutal how senseless Islamic terrorists can be. These people are the ones the most closest to a very high population of muslims, they know the unspeakable evil they face daily in their hands, which leads them to continuously wish they have the chance like Israel to protect themselves more and deal with them, because to establish a long lasting defence and peace, you have to go on an attack mode to rid or cleanse everyone of them of the virus which is living right beside them. It's easier to point fingers when you're not affected in any way. Meanwhile, how many times, pope, have you cried on behalf of Nigerian christians who are facing worse, purposeless and senseless killing of Nigerian christians including babies and even unborn children by some Muslims? None. It's all about political correctness than actually caring for the affected people, because if you do care, you'd instantly stood on the fact that the Venezuelan's citizens(who were actually happy for the reason you didn't even care) are the victims not their devilish president. The same way Israel is the victim and not hamas. The fact you thought you can actually earn peace and respect from Muslims by sitting down to discuss shows you don't have knowledge about the topic you're discussing or you do but you're just pretending(political correctness) by being blind to the harsh truth. You don't change whom ever made up their mind by sitting them down to discuss, you defend yourself by brutal force. They'll never change their mind against jihad because they have already been brainwash from childhood so no sitting for a day or month discussion will cleans an ideology which have been planted or happened since decades they were born unless you want to die first before any actual changing happens. Life is that harsh with these kind of people. It's either kill or be killed. Nigerians have been talking and nothing happened. The killings didn't stop or even reduce a little bit, but after Trump's airstrike intervention, christians have live for another day, at least for now. So many christians who would have been potentially unalived by the dead terrorists have to spend their Christmas and new year alive. Not just that but also peaceful, at least for now. Sometimes, when some of these westerners talk, it feel like throwing up at so much confidence in their lack of knowledge, the same way some of them actually thought that Africa is a country and not continent. It's better to keep still than give opinion on the specialty you lack so much knowledge. At least, go to the affected places and do some findings, including Nigeria, Venezuela and even Palestine and Israel and make some researchs on the people's conditions before throwing in some opinions. As a christian, how many times have you preached to Islam to guide their people away from becoming terrorists as terrorism is now synonymous to Islam? None Because you're actually afraid of the Muslim community. Then, it's easier to target the Jews or your fellow christian brothers, as you and your lots have made them an easy target where anybody can throws them stones and walk away. There's time for peace and there's time for war. There's time for everything. If your peace will cost you your life by some group who don't respect that after a long time of verbally showing them the boundaries, maybe, it's time for war. It's time for doing something different. I'm unapologetic catholic though and will remain for life. We love you poe, but please do some research before talking again. You're a man of influence, and your speech can cost innocent people their live or save it, so it's better to be careful of what to say. I apologize if there is any form of insult in my write-up(by all means I didn't intend any ) as something which may look innocent to one might look like an insult to another.

Catholic priests are getting kidnapped and killed in the northern part of Nigeria. Do you mind coming to live in that region? I bet you will be the one to beg Trump to drop all diplomatic " you can't evade another country", to come rescue you from kidnappers because the same Nigerian president wouldn't even care, just like Venezuela. People should stop playing politics with people's life.

Are you sure about respecting the will of the Venezuelan people.. because definitely Trump is respecting the will of the Venezuelan people. Perhaps you should do some more research
