New York reports first measles-related de@th in 30 years

A child in New York has passed on after contracting measles, marking the state’s first demise linked to the disease in 30 years, health authorities said on Monday, November 2. County and state officials confirmed that the child was from Lewis County in northern New York.

Governor Kathy Hochul expressed sympathy for the family following the announcement. “I am heartbroken to learn that a child in Lewis County has died after contracting measles,” she said in a statement. “As a mother and grandmother, I cannot imagine what this family is going through.”

Hochul also criticised the Trump administration’s approach to public health, describing the incident as a warning about the consequences of weakening protections against preventable diseases. She called it “a devastating reminder of what’s at stake when Washington deliberately erodes decades of progress in protecting Americans from preventable illnesses”.

Her comments came as the United States faced what the report described as its worst measles outbreak in 35 years. According to figures attributed to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4,834 cases had been reported across 47 states as of October 29.

Hochul declared a disaster emergency in New York in October following outbreaks within the state and in neighbouring states. Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000 following sustained vaccination campaigns. Elimination means continuous domestic transmission had been interrupted, rather than that the disease had disappeared worldwide.

The illness has resurged in recent years amid growing vaccine scepticism and mistrust of health authorities. Measles can cause fever, respiratory symptoms and a rash. Severe complications include pneumonia and inflammation of the brain, which can be fatal. The disease continues to claim tens of thousands of lives worldwide each year.
