35-year-old miner loses his life as mining pit collapses in Plateau

A 35-year-old miner, identified as Ibrahim Jabir, has passed away following the collapse of an illegal mining pit at Asaradan village in Jos East Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Security sources said the incident occurred at about 11:10 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when troops of Sector 1, Sub-Sector 12, of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) responded to a report of a mining pit collapse.

The sources said troops arrived at the location and discovered the corpse of the victim, which had already been recovered by members of the community.

The sources added that Keystone Division, Angware, had been contacted for further necessary action.

The incident highlights the dangers associated with illegal mining activities, particularly the risks posed by poorly constructed mining pits and the absence of adequate safety measures.

Further details regarding the circumstances of the collapse and possible regulatory action were not immediately available.
