Five die after diesel tanker lands on commercial vehicles in Ibadan

A fatal road accident involving a fully loaded 45,000-litre diesel tanker and several commercial vehicles has claimed the lives of five people in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, at the Aduloju Bus Stop, directly opposite Dominion City, along the busy Iwo Road–Ojoo Expressway. According to emergency responders, the victims included two men (one being the driver of a commercial car) and three female passengers.

Preliminary assessments by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) indicated that the heavy-duty tanker suffered a sudden brake failure while traveling at high speed. The driver lost control of the articulated vehicle, causing it to swerve violently and crush multiple Nissan Micra commercial sedans, trapping occupants inside the wreckage.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the fatalities and stated that the Commissioner of Police directed a swift deployment of officers to secure the area against potential secondary hazards, such as fuel explosions or looting. Joint teams from the Nigerian Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and OYRTMA successfully managed the traffic flow, extricated trapped passengers, and cleared the wreckage.

The remains of the deceased have been evacuated and deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital Mortuary.
