Comedian Jimmy Carr has drawn criticism online after defending Lindsay Clancy, who is accused of unaliving her three children, during an exchange with an audience member.
According to TMZ, Carr shared footage of the discussion on social media, arguing that people unfamiliar with postnatal depression might struggle to understand the case. He said some women who had experienced difficulties after childbirth felt empathy for Clancy because they feared they could have faced a similar crisis.
Carr portrayed her actions as the result of a severe mental health crisis rather than evil intent. Those comments reflected his interpretation of the case, rather than an established medical or legal finding. He also argued that society holds mothers to different standards, claiming the case would have attracted less attention if a father had been accused of the same conduct.
The remarks prompted mixed reactions online. Several users criticised his position, including some who said they normally agreed with him, while others defended his attempt to discuss maternal mental health. The controversy comes ahead of Carr’s upcoming comedy tour.
Separately, TMZ reported that a judge declined to hold an evidentiary hearing concerning a holdout juror following the mistrial in Clancy’s case. According to the report, the judge said the issues raised by her legal team emerged after the mistrial had been declared and could not be applied retrospectively to that decision.
