Bayern Munich Manager Vincent Kompany hospitalized after collapsing during training

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing while watching the club’s second team train on Friday.

The 40-year-old had been unwell with a viral infection and missed the pre-match press conference on Tuesday ahead of Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League clash against Arsenal. However, the former Manchester City and Belgium defender returned to the touchline on Wednesday for the match.

Bayern Munich confirmed the incident in a statement, saying: “Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern’s amateurs.”

The club added: “The first-team coach had been watching the second team’s session.”

Kompany will undergo further medical examinations and remain under medical supervision, the German club confirmed.

“For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations,” the statement added.

Bayern Munich’s next fixture is against Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with Kompany’s assistants expected to take charge of the team’s preparations and matchday responsibilities.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl expressed the club’s support for the manager, stressing that his health remains the top priority.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” Eberl said.

He added: “Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs.”

Eberl also expressed confidence in the coaching staff, saying: “His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a speedy recovery.”

Aaron Danks, one of Kompany’s assistants, had previously taken charge of Bayern’s pre-match press conference ahead of their Champions League encounter with Arsenal.

The club has not provided further details about the cause of Kompany’s collapse or how long he may remain away from his coaching duties. For now, Bayern Munich’s priority is ensuring the manager receives the necessary medical attention and time to recover.
