"Something that the Highways England would be very proud of" UK correspondent reports on road where Anthony Joshua suffered f@tal accident (video)

Nick Pisa, a UK journalist who works as a Senior Reporter with DailyMail, visited Nigeria to report on the state of the road where Anthony Joshua and his friends suffered a fat@l accident, and he had some interesting things to say.

Pisa, while examining the site of the crash, noted how smooth and without potholes the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was. He stated that roads like that is "something that the Highways England would be very proud of".

However, he noted that there was a dangerous driving culture and poor road safety management.

He mentioned that he's seen the speed limit "being flouted numerous times".

"The driving discipline here is absolutely atrocious, being over taken, undertaken. We've seen people trying to cross the road, literally taking their lives into their hands to dodge the traffic that is, as you can hear, thundering past me."

"The cars are overloaded, the trucks are overloaded. I've also seen cars driving the wrong way along the hard shoulder," he added.

He also noted the missing road signs and said there was no speed monitoring systems.

Sadly, two of Anthony Joshua's friends met their end along the road when the Lexus they were in rammed into a stationary truck on Monday  Dec. 29, 2025.

I thought people said there were potholes on the road. The truth is that most Nigerians drive with disregard for traffic laws, overtake anyhow, over speed, don't maintain their vehicles, be pressing phones while driving etc.

We know where this idiot is likely to come from. This ur comment gave out that u have never stepped out of your village. For your information, Lagos Ibadan express can compete with any road in the world in terms of quality.

Well said, besides, if there is speed limit on that road 80 percent of Nigerian will not obey, I've seen people on 3rd mainland bridge over speeding and not obeying the speed limit signs....

NO ENFORCEMENT OF TRAFFIC LAWS. JUST EXTORTION OF DRIVERS AND TRAVELERS BY THE MANY ROAD SAFETY PERSONNEL.

Nigerians know how to blame government but our bad attitudes on the road is a no go area. Road safety is more interested in printing plate number and changing driving license every 5years than to look for overloaded vehicles and sometimes too if Road safety want to enforce the law, Nigerians would start to complain and be fighting them.

That road, na Buhari make am. And anytime we pass through the road, we should say a small prayer for him. Same for the 2nd niger bridge for Onitsha

Most of our problems in Nigeria are self made. We can keep blaming the government till eternity.

How meaningful and poor Nigerians are surviving should be studied in foreign universities.

Spot on! Some drivers on Nigerian high ways should be in psychiatric wards. I always dread driving on interstate highways in a country where drivers licences are on sale in market place and police are more interested in bribes than enforcing the laws especially most commercial vehicles and their drivers lack valid driver's lincences.

Him dey craze!! Does he think the road has been the same way the British built it all this time? That's if they even built it at all. Awon people yii ma pon ara won le ke!

This is a honest assessment of the state of our roads. Yes there’s a lot more govt can do to make our roads safer and yet there’s more all of us can do too. If I were a legislator, the death penalty would be instituted for driving “one way”. It is such abhorrent behavior that is so dangerous and yet we feel so emboldened to do it. It’s one thing to blame govt for not enforcing laws but when it’s so prevalent then it seem like we’d have to get one law enforcement officer per motorists. Govt do better, Nigerian do way better too.

First time to have a good comment on Nigeria. May God rest the souls that lost their life. We have rules and regulations in the country but we Nigerians doesn't abide by the law. That's our major problem in Nigeria

This daily mail guy is talking rubbish comparing UK highway to Lagos Ibadan express. The M1 and M25 roads in the UK have no potholes and those two roads are the most extensive and vast road network in the Uk that run for 100s and 100s of miles. Not seen potholes on either. -bricks-

  23. Lola Ajayi

Somebody that said it's a paid PR, where do you see potholes from Lagos toll gate to Ibadan toll gate? We are our own problems and we keep on blaming government. Some people find it difficult to obey traffic light in some streets. They see whoever obeys as fools. They will even curse you.

Anthony Joshua's Accident is purely a vehicle and human error ,Nothing to do directly with the Government or the Roads. However if the Government has Good driving laws and vehicle maintenance laws like yearly MOT of all vehicles more than 3 years old, compulsory theory and practical driving tests for all new drivers , Speed Cameras and plate number recognition in all our highways , state and rural roads , and finally compulsory medical examination of all HGV ( Heavy Goods vehicle) Drivers yearly to ensure they are mentally and physically well including eye sight tests ,to drive these tankers and trailers , Testing all drivers caught speeding or driving erratically or involved in unusual accident for Alcohol and drugs. Enforcement of these laws and regulations is the key without minding if you are military, police or president flaunting these driving regulations can lead to heavy fines , points on your licence , banned from driving or in some cases prison sentence .When we do these then we are one step further to minimizing the high human errors involved in Nigeria RTA( Road Traffic Accident) . * Note* NIGERIA HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST RTA RATE IN THE WORLD " and over 70% of these is attributed to Human error and poor vehicle maintenance.

Thank you for your factual report. All the initial lies were either by Nigerian mischief makers or ignorant foreign reporters.

  26. Anonymous

There are places like FCT where many of the roads are good but still have high accident rate because of driver errors. In fact accidents that happen on bad roads occur either when parts of the road are good and a speeding car suddenly comes upon a bad portion of road or if a trailer topples over because of a bad section of road, even if the trailer was driving slowly.

That's nothing short of the truth. Being on that route is every pedestrian's nightmare.
