US reportedly strikes Iran on eve of US elections to determine leadership of Congress

US reportedly strikes Iran on eve of US elections to determine leadership of Congress

The United States military carried out limited strikes against Iran’s strategically vital Qeshm Island on Monday, according to reports from U.S. officials. Iranian state media confirmed several explosions on the island, which sits near the critical Strait of Hormuz.

According to officials, the operation was a defensive measure responding to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) firing surface-to-air missiles at U.S. assets. The military action unfolded on the eve of the U.S. midterm elections, amid an ongoing conflict that began on February 28.

Defensive Action or Strategic Warning
Sources told The Wall Street Journal that Monday’s operation was part of a series of low-profile, limited strikes conducted by Washington in recent weeks. Officials emphasized that these actions were kept quiet to avoid signaling any return to full-scale combat operations.

While U.S. defense representatives framed the engagement as necessary to protect regional assets and curb Iranian attacks on commercial shipping, the IRGC separately claimed it had intercepted and captured two U.S. drones south of Qeshm.

Qeshm, the largest island in the Persian Gulf, is known to house tactical assets including anti-ship missiles, marine mines, and drones stored within underground tunnel networks.

The latest military friction coincides with intensive indirect mediation efforts led by Qatar.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi characterized the diplomatic talks as highly active, pointing to a proposed seven-step framework from Tehran.

Administration figures have expressed cautious optimism. Vice President JD Vance noted progress in potential settlement talks, though he cautioned that Tehran remains unpredictable and that President Donald Trump intends to keep both military and diplomatic options open.

Meanwhile, oil markets registered minor gains following reports of the strike. Brent crude ticked up 0.67% to $105.48 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose 0.73% to $97.16, recovering only a fraction of Monday's sharp slide on peace-deal headlines.

Tuesday’s midterm elections will also determine the balance of power in Congress, introducing a critical variable regarding future war-funding oversight and Washington’s next moves in the region.
