Arise News Political Editor Sumner Sambo has asserted that nothing will stop Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi from seeking a second term should he win the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, November 2, Sambo dismissed arguments put forward by some political actors suggesting that Obi would serve a single four-year term before relinquishing power.
He characterized the notion as unrealistic, arguing that informal political arrangements cannot override constitutional rights.
“Nothing will stop Peter Obi from seeking a second term if he wins. He will betray a one-term pact,” Sambo declared. Sambo explained that once an individual assumes the presidency, the 1999 Constitution guarantees the right to seek re-election, rendering any pre-election gentleman’s agreement legally unenforceable and politically impractical.
He added that Nigerian politicians routinely pursue a second tenure upon taking office, noting that Obi's course of action would likely be no different.
The political editor's comments have ignited widespread debate across political circles and social media platforms. Supporters of the former governor have pushed back against the claim, while political opponents argue the statement exposes the underlying dynamics behind the proposed one-term arrangement.
