Nollywood actress and producer Mary Remmy Njoku has criticized the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, urging the regulatory chief to stop deflecting and focus on enforcing public health safety.
The controversy erupted following an circulation of counterfeit and substandard food products in Nigeria. In her remarks, Prof. Adeyeye claimed that many Nigerians "do not read" labels and remain "ignorant" of the agency's true constitutional mandate.
Adeyeye argued that NAFDAC is not responsible for regulating raw, fresh market produce—attributing that oversight to the Ministry of Agriculture. Instead, she clarified that NAFDAC's jurisdiction strictly covers processed and semi-processed food items.
Reacting to the Director-General's assertions via social media, Njoku rejected the narrative that consumer illiteracy is the root cause of the country's counterfeit food crisis.
"This isn't about whether Nigerians read labels. This is about whether the regulator is regulating," Njoku stated. She added that citizens "cannot read their way out of weak inspection, inadequate testing, and poor enforcement," demanding that the NAFDAC leadership prioritize protecting public health over shifting blame to the public.
