FCT Police Commissioner orders investigation after social commentator claimed police demanded N450k mobilisation fee

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi PhD. FCAI, has ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations that a mobilisation fee of N450,000 was demanded from citizens who went to the police station to report a case of N1 million fraud. 

Timothy Gabriel, a social commentator, made the accusation on Instagram, claiming his friend was duped by his mechanic and they reported to the police station at Garki, only for the officers to demand a fee to do their jobs (read here). 

In a statement released today, October 8, by the FCT Police Command PRO, SP Josephine Adeh, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, stated that any officer found liable will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and Regulations. 

The statement reads: 'The FCT Police Command is aware of a video circulating across social media platforms in which a creator, identified as “Tumma Gabriel,” alleged that, in the course of bringing a matter for investigation at the FCT Police Command Criminal Investigation Department, he was asked to provide the sum of Four Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N450,000) for “mobilisation and petition.” 

'The Command wishes to state clearly that it does not mandate or encourage its officers to solicit or demand any form of remuneration before, during, or after investigations. 

'Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi PhD. FCAI, has ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations, with a view to identifying any officer(s) who may be involved in the alleged act. Any person found liable will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and Regulations. 

'The Command also calls on the complainant to contact the Command through 08180382808, with a view to visiting the Command Headquarters and assisting the investigation by providing relevant information that may aid in identifying the officer(s) involved.'
