Christa Pike suffering 'cognitive challenges' and 'profound psychological trauma' after botched execution—Lawyers
Only woman on Tennessee's death row, Christa Pike, is experiencing severe cognitive difficulties and profound psychological trauma following a failed lethal injection attempt, according to statements released by her defense team.

The 50-year-old inmate regained consciousness on Tuesday after surviving two attempted lethal injection administrations on September 30 at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Pike was initially sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

In a formal statement addressing her medical condition, Pike's attorneys highlighted the severe mental and physical aftermath of the bungled procedure.

"While her physical recovery has been remarkable, significant questions remain about the long-term effects of what she endured," her defense counsel stated. "Christa is dealing with the profound psychological trauma of having survived a failed execution, including the terror, pain and uncertainty of believing she was about to die."

Defense attorneys added that Pike continues to face neurological hurdles as a result of the procedure.

"Christa also continues to experience cognitive challenges with concentration and memory," the attorneys added.

Medical personnel initially believed Pike was brain-dead on Monday evening, with plans to withdraw life support the following day. However, Pike regained consciousness early Tuesday morning and was assisted in walking by Wednesday afternoon. Her legal team confirmed that her lungs are clear, her arms are healing from significant procedural injuries, and she has resumed eating solid food.

Following the incident, outgoing Tennessee Governor Bill Lee suspended all scheduled executions across the state for the remainder of the year and mandated an independent review into the operational failures surrounding the procedure.

Pike's legal team has renewed demands for Governor Lee to commute her sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, arguing that she should not be subjected to a second execution attempt.
