A Nigerian woman, Omobolanle Esther, has announced her divorce after allegedly being in an abusive marriage for eight years, stating she “chose to leave to live.”
Sharing the news in a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, she celebrated her freedom, describing the profound relief she felt after receiving her divorce decree.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared that divorce taught her to focus less on her ex-husband's wrongdoings and forced her to confront the inner child trauma that led her to marrying him in the first.
She said while she wouldn't wish divorce on even her worst enemy, she encouraged other women in abusive relationships to prioritize their wellbeing, emphasizing that true love should not hurt and God would not want anyone to stay in pain.
“PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT. It is no longer a RUMOUR, it's now LEGALLY SIGNED, DATED AND DOCUMENTED,” she wrote."Divorce taught me to focus less on the wrongdoings of my ex husband and more on the inner child trauma that led me to choosing him as a forever partner in the first place. That is a hard thing to admit."It is easy to stay in victim mode as to why we sometimes end up here. But the reality is, conditioning chooses for us if we lack self awareness."In the ending of my marriage, I was forced to confront that little girl inside of me that was raised to believe that hurt was love."And in my healing, I am having to be painfully honest with myself. Vulnerability is freeing to me. The woman I am in this moment right now is extremely different than the woman I was just some months ago. I remember this version of myself and I am so excited to meet her again."I believe in the concept of extreme accountability. We choose our realities. We choose to stay. We chose to be there in the first place. But the rewarding fact of these, is that I chose to leave to live. 1 year after separation, I received my divorce decree. And the weight that has lifted off of my chest is insurmountable."I wouldn’t wish divorce on my worst enemy but I would pray it on a woman who has lost herself in choosing another who intentionally hurts her. You do not have to stay. God would not want you to stay in pain. Love should not hurt. I pray for myself daily and I pray for any other woman who is struggling to choose herself. Choose you. I am free forever.“Thanks you families and friends who stood with me during the lowest moments I'm immensely grateful. I choose to leave to live. I Choose me over and over again #gentlereminders#divorced #Narcissticabusesurvivor #Happymomentofmylife.”
