The Bayelsa State Government has imposed an immediate 24-hour curfew on Biseni community in Yenagoa Local Government Area following a protest during which several buildings belonging to traditional chiefs were reportedly set ablaze.
Governor Douye Diri announced the restriction on Friday, October 9, through a statement issued by his press secretary, Daniel Alabrah, citing a breakdown of law and order. The statement said the governor acted after receiving briefings from security commanders about road barricades and bonfires within the community.
Diri directed security operatives to restore order and urged residents to remain law-abiding, assuring them that the government would take measures to protect lives and property. The unrest reportedly followed a protest by youths over the lack of electricity, good roads and other basic amenities. The protesters said the oil-producing company operating in the area should provide the infrastructure.
A meeting was subsequently held between the youths and representatives of some groups, where assurances were reportedly given that their demands would be considered. Tension reportedly escalated after one youth was allegedly arrested over claims that he sponsored others to block the company’s access road.
