The Edo State Police Command has commenced investigation into the mysterious d3ath of a senior lecturer of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, who was found d3ad in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science of the university, reportedly d!ed on Monday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, with the police now probing the circumstances surrounding his final moments.
The development has raised questions over what transpired in the hotel room before the lecturer was found lifeless, as the police have arrested and detained the hotel owner, manager and a 21-year-old woman who was reportedly with the deceased shortly before his d3ath.
The spokesperson for the command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, who confirmed the incident, said the command received a report at about 8pm on Monday that the lecturer had lodged in the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
According to Ikoedem, Uwuigbe later asked the woman to leave the room to purchase water for him, but on her return, she reportedly found the lecturer lying lifeless and raised the alarm.
“The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police,” the PPRO stated.
The police spokesperson said the arrests were made as part of efforts to establish what transpired before the lecturer’s d3ath, stressing that the circumstances surrounding the incident remained under investigation.
She disclosed that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary for preservation, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The development has also attracted attention within the university community, with the institution confirming that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but distancing the university from the circumstances surrounding his death.
The university spokesperson, Otunba Aladenika, said the incident occurred outside the institution and was unrelated to the university’s official activities.
Aladenika further clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the university, describing the circumstances leading to the lecturer’s death as a matter concerning his private life.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
