Man shares deplorable state of a hostel room in University of Nigeria Nsukka

A Nigerian man has shared a video showing the deplorable state of a hostel room in University of Nigeria Nsukka. The man said his cousin, who is to resume in the institution, paid for the accommodation and he decided to pay a visit to the hostel and was stunned by how its state.

He wrote

‘’My cousin is supposed to resume school at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He paid for Hostel & I went there today to check it out. This is what I saw. Eni Njọkụ Hostel. When I asked, they said it's not swine that live there. I don't know who to curse, but u are cursed!

Let me shock you: when I got there to check the room for my cousin, was locked, while others were opened. When I asked students from the adjacent room, who provided the keys, they said it's locked because the room was for officials of the Student union. Meaning it's the best''

So the students cannot buy 1k paint and paint the walls and by two yards of ABA lining and put on the bed but they can paint face and tight trousers and be working up and down. This generation expecting everything on a platter of gold for nothing

That's exactly why there cannot be progress in Africa, it is animals like you that will be in leadership positions tomorrow, but you know how to beautify your own things, but when it comes to public service this condition is fine, animal in human skin!

Back in 2012 I was at Mbanefo hostel in UNN. I got different types of illnesses including infectious diseases because I was in a place worse than depicted in the photo. It was hell. I don't call myself "Lion" like UNN students and graduates do, because I didn't find anything positive in living like this.

Did person no school for Naija? This is pretty much standard in school hostels, even as at 25 years ago when I was in Naija. I went to a Federal Uni and visited my friends in other Federal Universities. Some were better than others but most were at this level. Yahoo boys, armed robbers masquerading as cultists, runs girls and a few early entrepreneurs managed to touch theirs up. I was able to afford an off campus room after Part 4 IT work experience and I touched it up too🤣. Memories abound. I won't change the experience for anything. We suffered but enjoyed school life. I got most of my life skills from boarding school and university days. Started from the bottom, now we are here. I thank God Almighty.

It's so terrible. Same with ABSU. My son sent pictures of the hostel he got which i paid 50k for. It was an eyesore. I quickly moved him to a private apartment. Those in power today got better treatment from government during their school days. Today, they're messing up our education. Shame on our leaders

Even animals will frown at this deplorable living condition. What is wrong with our country? Now I see why half the people are mad, always aggressive like rabid dogs. What do you expect when you keep people in this type of environment.

UNN and UNTH are both eyesores

The government does not care about education and no longer invests in it. It’s either you have money to send your children to private schools who will be happy to have government schools in such misery to continue to thrive or allow fate to direct to your destiny! There was a country!

And that's a Federal Government owned University! Nigeria has no value for education. Even when funds are provided by TETFund for projects in the Universities, the VCs, top officials in Ministry of Education and other high ranking University and TETFund staff squander it. You will be amazed to see how much TETFund will claim it has spent on hostels and lecture room at UNN. But go for physical inspection and see what's on ground! Because their children attend foreign or private Universities, they don't care what happens in the public ones. This is same scenario in the General or even teaching hospitals. A visit to some of these health centers or the Primary ones in villages will give you goose bumps! We live in a terribly pathetic clime!

You ain't seen nothing yet, all the public schools in nigeria is like this. I can confidently say that nigeria is a failed state, and tinubu is building a road worth trillions which will not go beyond ogun state. REVOLUTION NOW!!!.

Your cousin go arrange the room and tidy it up na, abi na school management go come clean the room for your cousin???

This is what most of the hostels in UNN look like. Not fit for humans. The toilet is even worse. School is supposed to restore the dignity of man, but in this case it takes it away. Every year the universities get allocations but the administration swallows it. Countries with less resources often house students in self contain rooms or shared apartments. In Nigeria our universities are short sighted, the dorm rooms are extremely unfit for people, and graduates leave the university tamed and unable to stand up or speak up to authorities.

  25. Anonymous

You can’t blame the university, people living in these hostels need to learn to take care of and maintain their rooms too

  26. Bandit

I can speak on this I got to unn in 1998 then gini mbanefo was vc it was worst from Alvan ikoku hostel to eni joku to ziks flat was all messed up the entire Franco hostel was messed up even mbanefo hostel the only decent hostel was PGD hostel so we had to rent houses at behind flat into amogbo and environs so no be today it only got worse in Nigeria we don’t maintain so if he can afford to leave off camp good but I advise as a fresher or Jambito make him manage am na experience courrupt vice chancellors have looted

The "billionaires" from the South East should rally round to improve or rebuild their Premier University, the pride of the South East, instead of aiming to "develop" LASU.

I had the opportunity to go to Harvard a few years ago for a course and I was blown away by the donor wall. People you have not heard about donating millions of dollars to the school. It will take the 4 level of stakeholders to fight this ship- Government providing the right funding, School Administrators using the funds right ( it embezzling it), private sector/alumini contributing to development and upkeep and finally the students keeping it tidy…..oh I missed all of us holding the stakeholders and ourselves accountable. Question is which of these groups do you belong to and how do you plan to help today?

  28. Anonymous

All the hostels inside Nigeria university campuses are like this. And they've been like this for decades. Each of every past and present ministers of education have seen them like this. Vice chancellors also know they are like this. They all don't care because their children don't attend them. Moreover, refurbishing projects like this don't yield much pocket egunje. Now, things are going to go worse because the Naira has been devalued to hyper-inflation. Brick layer now earns 10k from 5k.

Lol where did bunk bed come from? Maybe someone bought it cause UNN hostel. No get bunk. Your even lucky to see a functioning window

Lai, my hostel in my first year before I moved to Akintola/Akpabio in my third year. It's a pity. Well, probably better than what I saw at the Federal University of Technology, Minna where I did my postgraduate studies. Nigeria is a crime enclave. Our leaders don't care.

  32. Ekwuru Goodnews

This is even manageable come to rivers state university. Our toilet is like an infection hub funds are provided for renovations, but the top officials swallow all the funds even the sug officials are thieves!

  33. Anonymous

You do realize that two 5 gallons of paints would have done wonders to the hostel and it won't cost more than N50k. Compare that to the hostel fees they collect

A lady will emerge from this environment, put on better clothes and one idiot will still have the audacity to give her head. Now that's one hell of bacteria and virus menu in her hooohaaa.
