Three policemen were killed by suspected gunmen when the convoy of Nasarawa state deputy governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe ran into the assailants around Gako hill in Nasarawa Eggon local government on Tuesday, August 20th.
According to reports, when the escort commander was informed that there were suspected gunmen on the road, he stopped the convoy and took two other mobile police officers with him alongside the civilian driver to fend off the gunmen and open the road.
However, upon hearing gunshots from an oncoming Hilux van the gunmen took cover and ambushed the police officers and the driver killing all four. The rifles of the officers were also said to be taken away by the assailants.
The bodies of the slain policemen and their driver have since been deposited at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia.

Only a fool will risk his life for politicians in Nigeria. Watch he will give their wives small money and that's all. The kids will start suffering there after. While the politician kids are schooling abroad and his enjoying his life. Hope other police escorts will learn from this.

RIP to the dead...these deaths are avoidable...the escort commander made series of tactical errors...he broke off the escort and proceeded with two officers...(outnumbered)...the advancing officers fired warning shots which announced their arrival and gave them out for ambush. Going by the story, these officers drove on the road...what happened to flanking these robbers...approach from the flanks through the Bush path on foot and catch them unawares...not driving with blaring sirens in the middle of the road...were they expecting the bandits to wait for them on the road?

We need to raise some questions here. First, there was a tip-off of gunmen on the way, why did they still continue with the journey knowing it was already late into the night? Secondly, Lafia by geographic proximity is the nearest state capital to Abuja, why didn't they leave in the morning knowing that is just a journey of less than two hours? Why only security men and a driver were killed and none of the VIPs and the gov died? coz as Africans, we wld think ritual is involved. Lastly, was there any official duty to be performed that midnight that led to the waste of these lives?

The escort commander should have asked for man power from mopol barracks at nasarawa for cover up.. How does he think that 3 of them with those minor guns can chase sophisticated armed robbers? So sad the way they died
He did not know the number of the criminals. Neither did he know how prepared they were. That area is a mistake that is very common. His risk assessment of the area and the reaction from the criminals was very poor. He took avoidable risk.

This is a terrible incident. There are certain gallant displays that should not be attempted, no matter who is the principal. The principal will not replace the lives lost, rather, his escorts will be replaced on the spot. When this information came, the Officers would have just shut into the air, and return. The criminals will wait, hoping that those who shut into the air will approach. After their waiting and seeing no one, they will think that there will be a round up against them and they will go. The escort on their own will drive back and wait to assess the situation for one or two hours, Besides, why should the Deputy Governor choose to go to Abuja at that time of the night just to witness inauguration of Ministers, knowing that the Northern Region is very unsafe? The escort Team did not assess the situation very well to determine the Security Level of the area. They did not take into consideration that it was night time and could walk into danger which indeed happened. Their risk assessment was very poor.
