Scottish police are investigating the time convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein spent with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor at Balmoral, formerly known as Prince Andrew, at a private royal estate in Scotland that serves as a favored retreat for the British monarchy.
“We have received information and active enquiries are ongoing but these are at a very early stage,” a Police Scotland spokesperson said on Friday.
“All enquiries are evidence-led, with the needs of victim survivors at the heart of those enquiries. We would never confirm details of ongoing enquiries and it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
British media reports indicate the investigation relates to allegations that women were trafficked to the estate.
Since the release of court files detailing Epstein's network, Mountbatten-Windsor—known as Prince Andrew until King Charles III stripped him of his royal titles—has faced a series of allegations regarding his links to the late financier. He was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in February and interviewed under caution before being released.
The ongoing scandal has severely damaged Mountbatten-Windsor’s reputation and created a major public crisis for Britain’s royal family. Photographs released by U.S. prosecutors in 2021 appear to show Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, the financier’s associate currently serving a federal prison sentence in the United States for sex trafficking, visiting Balmoral in 1999.
Buckingham Palace has consistently stated that it does not speak for Mountbatten-Windsor and does not comment on active police inquiries.
Mountbatten-Windsor has denied all allegations of wrongdoing concerning his relationship with Epstein. Authorities stated that a separate investigation into potential misconduct in public office during his tenure as a British trade envoy remains ongoing.
