Man sentenced to death by hanging for killing his friend in Kogi

A Kogi State High Court sitting in Okene has sentenced one Abdulmutalib Abduljabar to death by hanging for k!lling his friend, Momohjimoh Abduljafar. 

Delivering judgment on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Justice A.S. Hussein found the defendant guilty of culpable homicide punishable with death under Section 221 of the Kogi State Penal Code, 2019 (as amended).

The presiding judge held that the evidence tendered by the prosecution was overwhelming and proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant intentionally st@bbed his friend to d-ath.

According to the prosecution counsel, Esther J. John, Esq., in her written address, the defendant stabbed his friend, Momohjimoh Abduljafar, with a sharp lethal object on June 6, 2025, at GKAS Hotel in Okene, which led to his death.. 

In his ruling, Justice Hussein dismissed the argument of counsel to the defendant, Baba Shehu Ahmad, and sentenced Abdulmutalib to d-ath by hanging.

In her reaction, the prosecuting counsel, Esther John, Esq., expressed satisfaction with the judgment, saying justice had once again been served, and commended the presiding judge for the landmark ruling.

However, counsel to the defendant, Baba Shehu Ahmad, said he would file an appeal after studying the certified true copy of the judgment.

Also, the family of the late Momohjimoh Abduljafar expressed satisfaction with the judgment.
