Containers and debris have been spotted floating in the Strait of Hormuz following a series of attacks by Iran on commercial vessels in the strategic waterway.
Footage published by Al Jazeera on Thursday, October 15, 2026, shows debris including shipping containers, iPhones, and several other goods scattered across the sea after Iran escalated attacks in the Strait of Hormuz
One of the vessels, the Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride, sank after sustaining damage and catching fire. Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority confirmed that all 21 crew members were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported.
This comes after Iran escalated attacks in the Strait of Hormuz in an attempt to wreak economic havoc on the Trump administration.
Iran's surge in attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz may be an attempt to exploit US restraint ahead of the midterm elections and undermine a recovery in Persian Gulf oil shipments, experts told Iran International.
Twelve vessels were attacked between October 5 and 11, including six on Sunday alone, and on Tuesday a tanker and a container ship were struck by unknown projectiles, according to UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), marking one of the most intense periods of attacks since the war began.
