A Montana high school softball player unexpectedly reunited with her biological sister during a tournament in Belgrade, Montana, after a teammate noticed the striking physical resemblance between the two opponents.
Samantha Rensvold, 19, was adopted as an infant through a closed adoption process. While she knew she had a younger biological sister, sealed adoption records meant she had no details regarding her sister's identity, location, or appearance.
During the tournament, a teammate pointed out 18-year-old Kyann Dean on the opposing roster, noting the close similarity in their features. Rensvold initially held back from approaching Dean directly, but after discussing the encounter with her mother, the family checked the tournament registration and confirmed Dean's name matched the moniker chosen by their biological mother.

Rensvold's mother approached Dean's family at the field, where both sides cross-referenced the birth mother’s name and the hospital of birth, confirming the biological connection. The sisters met on the field immediately following the confirmation.
Both women were placed for adoption as babies by separate families in Great Falls, Montana, and grew up roughly 400 miles apart—Rensvold in Polson and Dean in Worden. Under Montana law, adoption records remain automatically sealed and confidential unless opened by court order.
Since connecting, the sisters have uncovered numerous shared traits and parallels. Both played high school volleyball, wore the number six jersey, played the same position, and shared identical mannerisms.
Rensvold currently attends Spokane Community College in Washington, where she competes on the softball team, while Dean attends college in North Dakota. The two have continued to build their relationship, with Dean recently visiting Rensvold and her family in Washington.
