A Nigerian mother identified as Ms Essien, has sparked a debate online after criticizing parents who refuse to adhere to school dress codes during Independence Day celebration.
To mark Nigeria’s annual independence, many schools require students to wear traditional indigenous attire. Ms Essien argued that responsible parents must follow these school directives to shield their children from the emotional distress and embarrassment of feeling left out when surrounded by peers in compliance.
She went a step further by claiming that ignoring administrative guidelines negatively impacts a child's psychological development. According to Ms Essein, parents who violate basic regulations risk raising children with low self-esteem, which she suggests can eventually manifest as bullying behaviour later in life.
The submission has split opinions online. While some users backed her perspective and urged parents to prioritize school requirements, others rose in defence of struggling families. They stated that excessive corporate workloads or hectic schedules could cause busy parents to overlook notification emails, arguing they should not be harshly judged for accidental oversights.
