Public servants begin three-day warning strike over hardship, wages

Public service workers under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council at twelve midnight today October 2, began a three-day warning strike from 2nd to 4th October over worsening economic hardship and demands for better wages.

The council directed workers in federal, state and local governments to join the action, which will begin at midnight Friday and end Sunday.

The decision was contained in a circular dated October 1st and signed by the council’s National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga, following the Federal Government’s failure to address demands submitted to President Bola Tinubu on 21st of September.

The aggrieved workers are demanding a reduction in petrol prices to N500 per litre, an immediate wage award and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council had earlier called for the urgent establishment of a tripartite committee to begin negotiations, saying the process should start early enough to prevent delays in implementing a new wage law.

In the latest circular, the council said, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”

It also directed public servants to participate, saying, “all Public Servants in the services of Federal, State and Local Governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all.”

The strike comes as Nigerians battle rising price of fuel, transport, House rents, and other costs of living.
