‘Cristiano Ronaldo could have ended his career at World Cup’ – Portugal Football Federation President

Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) President Pedro Proença has addressed the recent controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and national team head coach Jorge Jesus, emphasizing that the legendary forward's commitment to his country remains absolute.

The fallout occurred when Ronaldo abruptly departed the national team training camp following friction with Jorge Jesus ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark. Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Proença defended the veteran icon and clarified his status within the squad:

“Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest player in history. He has devoted more than 20 years to Portuguese football and embodies the ultimate representation of Portuguese identity,” Proença said, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

“His participation with the national team is thoroughly justified by his outstanding footballing abilities, a fact that cannot be disputed. He will maintain his position within this squad whenever he is fit and ready.”

Proença dismissed the dispute as an internal misunderstanding that can be smoothed over, noting that Ronaldo served as captain during the opening match of the international window. He also highlighted the forward's enduring dedication to the national crest despite having the opportunity to step away from international football on a global stage.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese icon and an exceptional player. He could have ended his career at the World Cup, but he didn’t because of his love for his national team. I can attest to the bond he shares with the Portuguese people and our national team,” Proença added.

With the current slate of four Nations League matches concluded, the PFF president confirmed that federation officials will sit down in a calm environment to resolve the impasse and ensure Ronaldo remains an integral part of Portugal's future plans

But Ronaldo can be in the team and seldom play, he doesn't really have to play every game tho.. He can sit some out and still be an influential member of the team
