Black Lives Matter protest holds in Victoria Island, Lagos, under the rain; Nigerians react

Black Lives Matter protest holds in Victoria Island, Lagos, under the rain; Nigerians react

Nigerians braved the rain to protest the murder of George Floyd and to call for an end to racial injustice.

The protest was organised by the Black Lives Matter Movement in Nigeria (BLMMN). The convener, Josephine Okpara, stormed the streets of Victoria Island, Lagos, with other protesters.

The protest comes after George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly 9 minutes during an arrest.

Speaking on behalf of the group, convener, Josephine Okpara said the US must put an end to “white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on black communities by the state and vigilantes”.

Bad as it is. This is Foolishness. How many times have these lazy youths protested the hundreds of thousands of killings by Fulani herdsmen, BH, Bandits, kidnappers, killing of unarmed IPOB members, Niger Delta youths, llotings by Government Officials, etc. Sponsored Political protest indeed. Soon many of these same people would be at the United States Embassy begging for VISA and Yeyebrities and Yeyecellencies begging to go to the United States also. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Yes, it is ok for some Nigerians to demonstrate in support. The fact that we don't do same in the face of extrajudicial killings here should not be used to ridicule the local demonstration here to protest George Floyd's murder. It isn't because we are dumb that we don't protest such practices by our law enforcement, you come out to carry out peaceful protest here in Nigeria, you most assuredly will be gunned down. Please don't argue with me about this, except you are plain stupid or just an asshole.

We protest and agitate for our own nation and the federal government unleashed soldiers on us, they abuse us. ( oh, I've forgotten we are 'white' people). Those who are protesting in U.S.A. 95% of them are not working but they earn money. look at zombies from naija saying 'black life matter' lol. You jump onto foreign things simply because it's trending, and meanwhile, you have your own internal issues with police brutality, corruption in the system, nepotism and state of origin policy that keeps on separating us rather than unite us as a people. Americans are fighting their own cause and we are here protesting Black lives matters. Who has been killing the black lives in Nigeria? Is it the whites who left the country over five decades ago in 1960, still we don't seem to love ourselves. Smh

The same people are condemning those protesting. George Floyd represents all the inhuman treatments. You are made to jump though hoops just to apply and you pay so much money and still get a racist treatment. Some people are so used to it they even defend their colonial masters! Every single day in Nigeria countless lives are lost from so called accidental discharge, road accidents, banditry, terorism, quackery... all bye products of corruption and inefficient leadership. My concern is how many times have you all gone on the street to protest such societal ills affecting you and I? Don’t your own lives matter? Everything about Nigger Area is a comedy, when a thing gets to Nigger Area, It is fake, fraud and sponsored and you cannot believe it, a Country where citizen should be protesting to oust an incompetent Useless President, demanding accountability from her failed recycled myopic and irresponsible Politician, A country where thugs can chase people from Elections, where ballot boxes are carted away without consequence, where Police kills and intimidate citizens and everyone is unconcerned because they were unaffected, a country where an innocent girl who went to read in a church was raped and murdered and 200 Million mumu looked the other way and only becomes active in twitter and facebook, a country where celebrities are untouched by the groaning of a people nestled in penury, a country where a President keeps borrowing and putting the nation in bondage before he dies and no one dares to demand accountability, a country where a so called President cannot address the Nation but run the country by proxy using morons like himself to keep claiming the Federal government said" a country without electricity, that has remain so for many years and people are not protesting because they have become used to poverty and have resigned to fate, a country with bad road, a country where police collects bribe in broad day light and citizens are used to it, a country where a trigger happy police can hold thousand to hostage and everyone chicken out in trepidation., a country that aught to have protested when Sowore called for civil disobedience, but they waited and watched a useless government arrest Sowore without going on the street to demand his immediate release. a country that has died since the Despot in Power ousted Shagari and has not progressed ever since because of irresponsible politician, The same countrymen, leaves Leprosy and are treating rabies, worried about Black Lives matter where citizens of America are not dummies like themselves. Nigerians just loves to deceive themselves, they make serious issues a mockery. You are in your country and you cannot fight your useless irresponsible government. demand that no police should waste a single life with live bullets, infact burn down the Police huts of oppression and demand justice for all the abuse, Police in Nigeria have become notorious because they have consistently seen how chicken hearted Nigerians are, protecting thieves (Politician) and abusing 200 Million mumu who have been conquered by fear. Yet Nigerian protest Black Lives matter ongoing in America where there is Law and the government is still very sane to know the power of collective voices. Nigerians please stop shaming yourselves, we know black lives matter, let it matter first in Nigeria. stop shaming yourselves. Americans does not care about you. Donald Trump called you shithole and that did not start a protest against your corrupt government . Please stop shaming yourselves . start from home. you have no Leader. never had one. Protest against your wicked abusers called leaders

You have said it all. I have never seen a household where the father (leader) is shy to address the family. Except all of you are seeing this from a none existing president angle. Power is sweet. Making yourself relevant is very important. How can you attain the highest peak in Nigerian and decides to lock yourself away? How are we sure that these loans are actually signed by MR. INTEGRITY? All of a sudden the first lady that was complaining about seeing her husband is fine with the arrangement? Who will bell the cat? Who will lead the struggle? When labor force have been divided into groups. Compromised so they will never speak in one voice. Amachi was caught telling someone that nothing will ever be good as long as Bubu is the president. That is enough to ignite the flame of solidarity but we all went to churches and mosques to pray for divine intervention...... We are quick to forget but the result is the case. The same Amechi is still in power and Nigerians have forgotten. Put the president in a bullet proof glass and drive him around Aso Rock for us to be sure that he is still the one calling the shots. the whole thing looks like comic or tales by the moon light.

There's nothing wrong with protesting in any African country. We're all BLACK! plus you don't where you will find yourself or travel to . Imagine after all these protest white people start treating black people nicely in the western world(globally) and all seems safe and happy with white people. Won't YOU want to frequently travel abroad happily without thinking about racism again.?? Or white people looking at YOU as criminals. EH.. besides in every African country foreigners treat Africans bad too.

I remember when 2BABA arranged a protest, Nigeria government stopped him from going ahead because they know the power of protesting is the voice of people in one voice, there is power in peaceful mass protesting. Protesting is not in our culture that is why Nigeria Governments do whatever they like knowing that we have zero courage to come out and protest for our own interest. This move is good if we can also start doing the protesting for our own interest, in our own land, our own nation , our own Nigeria. Don’t just come on social media to do your blah blah blah. When South Africans started the killings of other Africans, there was a protest, though it wasn’t a peaceful protest but the voice of the people was heard and that’s the reason for protesting. WE HAVE TO ADOPT A CULTURE OF A PEACEFUL PROTEST NATIONWIDE it will do us good going forward.

Why am I a Nigerian? Pls people answer me, this is madness, boko halam has been killing a lot of people no protest, there are more bad roads than all the leaders of Nigeria so far, during the lock down at a point Nigeria forces killed more Nigerians than Covid19 no protest, there are so many reasons to protest in Nigeria what concern us and the USA? They live a better life than most of us, they don't spent hours in the hospitals, they don't need to go to bank and come home late. A average Nigeria rather die in the laps of lady than to fight for justice, why fight another's man battle when u haven't won one at of your battles, my greatest regret is the green white green, the largest zoo in the whole world

I think Africans should protest against racism and the killing of innocent blacks people by the so called white! But down here in Nigeria we have a lot of things that we should protest for; ranging from bad leadership, looting, unaccountability, police brutality, rape, incessant killings and invasion of land by the fulani herdsmen, intimidation and assault from those in authority, influx of almaljiri to other states, marginalization, injustice, just to mention but a few !

Hahahahaha. The organizer of this protest is seeking a U.S. green card or planning to file for asylum somewhere soon. That's my only explanation for this foolishness.

We should not be quick to condemning these protesters. I like the organizers. That is how things are supposed to be. We are connected all over the world in one way or the other. When South Africa was suffering, Nigerians were the pioneers of their fights. When Chibok girls were abducted, the first lady of the United States of America stood with us. We must sympathize with US because we have loved ones there and the issue over there affects us in one way or the other. If only they will continue with this spirit and also protest against other issues in the country. They should not discourage them. The reason they even allowed the protesters to step out of their homes was because it is not something that will affect APC. If they had any agenda against the government, the leader must have been picked up long ago. All of here are just Twitter Warriors, and Linda Ikeji’s blog Sharka Zulus. If they fix a date for the match, will you participate? And we have many JUDAS here waiting to sell us out if we plan anything.

Useless hypocrites, unrepentant fools. The worst is happening in your own backyards by the government you voted into office, yet no match or outcry. This is why you will remain perpetually stagnant and poverty capital of the world.
