Nigerian Professor decries killing of mosquitoes, says they are our friends

A professor has called for an end to the killing of mosquitoes, stating that they are friends and allies to humans and we could learn a lot from them. Adeolu Ande, a Professor of Entomology at the University of Ilorin, made this known on Monday in a paper he presented at a public seminar organised by University of Ilorin.
He said that, rather than kill mosquitoes, man should discover ways to manage them because they would exist whether we like them or not and will continue to source blood from humans. He called on zoologists to fulfill their role of being foster parents of animals in the Zoo because that's what's expected of them, adding that they should be familiar with the needs and health status of animals, insects included.

In his paper titled, 'Consider the ways of Ants and be Wise', the entomologist described insects as the “most successful and influential group’’ of organisms in the biosphere. He said that humans have a lot to learn from insects in order to be wise. He said that insects make positive influence such as; pollination of flowers, sustenance of the ecosystem, serve as a source of silk, act as biological control agents and food source, but lamented that these impacts made by the insects are underplayed and not appreciated, instead we focus on their negative influences which he said are minimal.

He said:
“Human life is beset with inevitable associations with insects that have over the years influenced human destiny positively and negatively. Negative influences, such a disease transmission, crop losses, food spoilage, economic losses and nuisance value caused by less than 5 per cent of insect species have been exaggerated by man."
Ande said that man deliberately misunderstood the role of mosquitoes and frequently described them as causing the diseases they transmit.

He said:
“In the actual sense, mosquitoes are equally sick but inadvertently and unwillingly convey pathogens that are the real causal agents of these diseases. The female mosquito could be described as an example of a true mother who is forced to undertake suicide mission in its bid to provide for its unborn children. The adult female mosquitoes have exceptional value for child raising hence the level of commitment and risk they take on the mission that entails decision between life and death. The after effect of this commitment is a well thought out plan that forestalls most of the factors that may stand in the way of raising good children.
"I am sure most human females will not take comparable decision in the face of similar attendant risks. It is however certain that children born after well thought-out and risky conditions are better posited for quality living than those produced carelessly."
The professor called for improvement in Zoology curriculum to ensure better focus on organisms that feature prominently around man.

I don't need to read this to condemn his studies. He lacks a good creative and vibrant mind to know what area of importance to do his research. But it it's to promote mosquitoes, he's good to be laughed at

To all who have commented and in the process have abused or disdained this scholar of repute, I have little to no worries over your level of intellectualism. Just try to get a copy of his Inaugural lecture then maybe you'd be enlightened and relieved of your deranged mind.

Nonsense research work born out of laziness.

Mosquitoes will exist as long as life exist. What he's saying is that we should inculcate the habit of controlling the vector of malaria instead of using insecticides which chemically pose as threats to human lives. Also, mosquitoes become resistant to these insecticides. That's why if you use a particular insecticide for a long time, you notice mosquitoes don't get affected anymore.
Stop jumping into conclusions (like it's a sport) if you did not attend the lecture.

lack words prof but pls dont increase the pains people are going through now.

This man is an alarmist. No one is killing mosquitos, they are bring genetically modified, to make those that carry the Malaria parasite unable to reproduce. Meaning less people will die from Malaria.

He's obviously rich and can afford anti Malaria medication, otherwise he wouldn't be chatting nonsense.

Now I know not to believe news from these bloggers. I attended the lecture and this is just an abstract of what he said. Bloggers with captivating captions.. Nigerians really need to stop jumping to conclusions..

The lecture was held lastweek's Thursday. But bloggers are just posting it now. If they really attended the lecture they won't mislead people as such..
Such an incomplete summary of the whole 1hr+ lecture..

Another lazy cut-and-paste work by a Nigerian Professor. Mosquitos are not sick, they were designed that way by nature. And your "research" didn't mention anything about the benefits of having mosquitos around which are that they serve as planktonic food to fishes and support marsh ecological systems. Apart from that they pose a serious threat to human health and should be prevented from encroaching into human habitations and we should not disrupt local ecogical systems where mosquitos play an important role in maintaining the "circle of life"

Please sir do your own research and come up with your own material than posting this rubbish!

I believe we should read the full text to understanding before jumping to conclusion.Indeed we have a lot to learn from the topic, read and digest before you condemn

Where has the mosquitoes you have been killing all this year lead you to..have you been able to eradicate them all with all the insecticdes you use?? Why do people just jump to conclusion without understanding...hes trying to say we should try to tolerate them and find a way to get immune to them for mosquitoes are now resisant to the insecticides and mosquitoes will always exist and as long they exist they need human blood to develop their eggs which is considered as acting like a mother to save the young one buh instead we need to develop way to resist them and stay immune to the infection they spread or keep ur enviroment clean
