House of Representatives in a rowdy session as members reject bill to establish South-East Development Commission

The House of Representatives was today thrown into a rowdy session after majority of the lawmakers rejected a bill for the establishment of the South East Development Commission, SEDC. The lawmakers turned down the bill because according to them, there was not enough consultations carried out before the bill was presented to the House.

This however did not go down well with the lawmakers from the South East region. The South Eastern lawmakers argue that the South-East Development Commission if established, would be charged with the responsibility, among other things, to receive and manage funds from allocation of the Federation Account for the development, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of roads, houses and other infrastructure, as well as tackle the menace of poverty, ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the South-East states and for other related matters (HB 915).

According to Honourable Chukwuka Onyema who led the debate for the bill, the commission would serve as a unifying factor for Nigerians from the South East. After listening to the debate, the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara put the question for the bill to scale for the next reading.

Majority of the lawmakers answered nay and it was immediately stepped down. It is however not clear whether the South Eastern lawmakers would amend the bill and represent it to the house.

I think the Igbo people have cheating as a nature.

My question is why would they have South Eastern Development Commission and other regions should not have?

What makes South East different from North Central, North East, South West?

I understand the Niger-Delta part? They give us what we eat in Nigeria but Igbos are parasitic, no natural resources that is yielding anything for this country, no ocean, no seaport, nothing whatsoever, so why should Nigeria use Niger Delta money and South West money to develop South East?

Lagos asked for Special Status, it was rejected despite Lagos providing almost all VATs and Company Income Taxes in Nigeria, including but not limited to Ports and Customs tariffs.

Igbos should stop cheating, my two cents

It serves them right, when they joined hands with the Northern oligarchs to oppose and kill the ratification of 20 Local government Areas for Lagos State, they did not know that their own too is coming. Now they know how it feels.

I like d speech of d new Ohaneze Ndigbo President. Pls read objectively.

In my own opinion, d enemy of Ndigbo is Ndigbo itself. I remember a time in this country when all d 6 ministers in Jonathan's kitchen cabinet were all Igbo's. Ayim Pius Ayim was SGF, Ngozi Okonjo Iwealla was in charge finance, Emeka Wogu was in Labour and productivity, Berth Nnaji was in Power and Energy, Dieziani Madueke was d powerful minister for oil. The 6 of them outside d Federal Executive Council would meet and decide what and what not to be discussed at d larger FEC. Whatever they decided would eventually be d position of government. In 6 years, this was d situation. Okiro and Onovo had d police under their control. Ihejerika and later Minimah controlled d Army. These powerful Igbo's could do and undo. Nigeria was in their pockets.
Rather than care about d poor Igbo chaps scattered all over d country, they were busy diverting billions of naira into their accounts at home and abroad. D 2nd Niger Bridge, they didn't do. They shared d money. The Lagos/Calabar rail lines passing through 9 States, 3 of them in d SE, they were not bothered. They refused to pay d Chinese d Counter part fund. They shared d money. Enugu/Onitsha, Aba/PH and other roads of economic importance to their fellow Igbo's, they abandoned.

Who is to blame? Who is marginalising d Igbo's?

You had your chance, you bungled it. There was only 1 Yoruba minister worth mentioning at d time, Akinwunmi Adesina. He was in Agric. His budget was less than 1% while Emeka Wogu in Labor had over 10% for his ministry, Ayim had unlimited access to d treasury for d benefit of himself and family members. The poor Igbo guys meant nothing to him. If an Igbo becomes President tomorrow after Jonathan, will there be any difference? The Igbo man will marginalise his fellow Igbo people.

Anon 21.44..... truth be told, the ibos are the most marginalised of the 3 major tribes in Nigeria, i.e Hausa, yoruba, Igbo............

Nobody stays much in an abusive relationship,....when you are not valued in a relationship, you naturally begin to think of how to exit that relationship...

In this current dispensation under our Head honcho Buhari, the igbos have been told in very clear terms that all 3 fingers are equal but some 2fingers (yoruba and hausa) are more equal than the others.
Looking @the major federal appointments, it's clear to see... No ibo man holds any senior army, police, intelligence or defence position amongst many other such lopsided appointments.

Obviously no ibo man will be president of Nigeria anytime soon, (if the political equation doesn't change)

Now I am of the opinion that these differences bw the ibo and Nigerians can be sorted out peacefully. But several others dont..... hence the agitation for Biafra/secession.

The FG. Has to treat this biafra/ibo agitation a lot more seriously because it's gaining momentum, when you push a certain people too much and their backs are up the wall, you might not like their reactions.

If this is not handled well by FG potentially this is capable of triggering another civil war. Boko haram will be child's play to this.

That's y they're clamouring for biafra na dummy 😪 Aren't you in this country to know the Igbos are marginalized?. No, I'm not even Igbo

Anonymous said...

This is exactly why the S.E. is agitating for a sovereign territory. The south eastern region has been subjected to organized marginalization and exploitation by Nigerian political cabals led by the Hausa/Fulanis with helping hands offered by the westerners. Those fools in the Nigerian parliament had an opportunity to keep the country unified but as expected with things at the federal level-it was squandered. The young people of the eastern extraction look at this and clearly see the reason why their fathers fought the civil war. Nigeria is a zoo indeed, and the Igbo man from all indication is better off in his own country--the Biafra.

The same north east draining the nations treasury has development commission. Niger delta with all the militancy had one. The south east cannot have one. The south east can rebuild itself,we are survivors, great people hence the envy. From self made millionaires like Linda to importers and exporters,we achieve.Ask your dad what was done to this region during the war yet they lead the pack after today. Have you heard the word "impossible" it does not exist with us

Great IBO! This request is out of pain of your region's under-development but who is to blame for a someone that left his/her room untidy before leaving for work? Such person will endup sleeping on an untidy bed,
There is wealth and resources untaped in the SE region, let the allocation be used and not stolen, ask your governors and reps to work and stop being selfish, acting like this will only embarrass your biafristic status,
Open your eyes ndi IBO your governors and reps should start working don't ask for no special treatment! Ibo is not special than North or west or every other region in Nigeria.
Check around, the IBO have a reason, never seems satisfied

The SE is not the only under developed region in Nigeria!there are worse scenerio and situations in the North and other regions

This selfish requests of succession and outrageous demands will keep on embarrassing the ibo people as a whole, painting the ibo as unsatisfied ethnicity.
The ibo people just gonna continue to suffer if its leaders and representatives in SE fail to stand up to its responsibilities,
South west don't even have time for such demands that IBO legislators are making, government down in west are working out their asses in their states without no special funds or treatment!
Its obvious the north are in control of power and government thereby causing the northern cabals get the abundant of Nigeria's oil revenue via power and caucus,
the aggitation of the Ibo should be devolution of federal government revenues to a REGIONAL GOVERNMENT or more of government allocations to all the regions respectively, they are asking for equality not the other way round, all the regions deserves a development Ministry,

West have since stayed back home to work, they do not just run out of their region and ask for special allocations, There was agriculture before crudeoil, all the region had equal opportunity from the start but corruption was endless and its obvious that ibo leaders haven't done much leading to the SE's underdevelopment.

I laugh wen I hear the IBO say they are in control of the Nigerian economy, what a childish thought! at this age and time...please Ndi IBO go and ask Dangote,Babangida,Atiku,Tinubu,Obasanjo, and Otedola lately Ayiri... Ask these Aristocrats how the foundations of Nigeria's economy was built IBO is was ever a replaceable substitute.

Nigeria's economy has grown beyond small scale spare parts market.
Its pathetic for a region that is landlocked and without a actual standard seaport to think of succession, wow!
Nnamdi KANU and likes needs to chill.
Nigeria is the big picture, like the federalism in USA the Nation is bigger than any single region.

IBOs will only harm and suffer its people more if they try to act funny more than their 24hrs of tribute because as it is people are already aware of the fact that IBO are unsatisfactory in nature.
The solution is that government should look into all the existing region and figure out a masterplan to develop the regions, probably decentralize the federal government because it appears there is too much Money and Power in the center, this has caused a lot of unwarranted stealing by government officials, it has also affect the honesty of appointment of personnels into government jobs, there should be more of regional government for independent regional developments.

I think Britain should keep a vigilant eye on this country, they created Nigeria, they should be in advisory to our Nation-State, its highly important, they found us and should not leave us completely, thank God Buhari has been placed on bench for awhile over there,

Asking for SE Ministry of development is selfishness!!!
