Photo: Women in Lagos petition state house of assembly over continued harassment by male traders at Balogun, Tejuosho markets

A group of women residing in Lagos, have petitioned the state house of Assembly over the continued harassment faced by women in the state from male traders at most Lagos markets, particularly Balogun and Tejuosho market. The petition was submitted yesterday May 30th. Part of the petition reads:

"We regret to say the harassment being meted out to women at these markets had been a thing of concern both in the past and present times. There continues to be reports from women about how men from the market scene harass women who go shopping in these markets. These experiences leave a bad taste in the psyche of the victims. It makes shopping in Lagos market unpleasant and unsafe for women.
Women find it so much embarrassing to find men(traders) attempting to or holding their waists, attempting to touch their breast whistling or speaking obscenities at them".

Very correct! 95% of it by useless Igbos who will still not leave Lagos if Biafra is given to them!
It's really disheartening! I'm a guy but watch ladies get harassed helplessly by these guys!

it is about time, the harassment in the name of trying to get women to come and buy their goods have been going on for years. they even shout all sort of sexual innuendos at women passing by.

I stopped going really. My breasts were almost sagging, my skin crawls with the touching of these dirty men, I wear long sleeves to reduce the effect, and most times, I latch on the first guy that protects me from a horrorful harassment by these guys in the name of getting customers.

Infact, the worst ones are the teen ones. Anything to cop a feel from any lady of any age will do.

Very lovely initiatives. When this is resolved, I will reconsider visiting these markets

Gov need to do something about this, its alarming and disturbing. I 've been harassed several times before and a particular one was when a conductor in a slowly moving bus(molue) grabbed my breast while I was walking on the street. I was so pained that if I got hold of him, I could commit murder but he went away in d vehicle and I had to let go of d pain with an uncontrollable cry as I walked away.

You described Yorubas as "wretched" ? Your land is cursed that's why you all can't be become tangible until you hurl your illeterate, uncultured, dirty selves to Yoruba lands (especially) Lagos in search of a life but somehow like everywhere you touch, you try to infest Lagos with your rot. You all be making noise about been prosperous but never in history has an igbo man or woman been the wealthiest in the nation. Once you don push small cocaine by venza y'all think you have arrived. Useless empty barrels making the loudest noise since 1960.

In fact on Saturday the 27th i punched a guy in the market for touching my wife's hand while we were walking through the stalls. I was expecting the dude to respond apparently fear enveloped him as he could see a 120kg 6ft 4in strong fierce looking male after all the hot sun has penetrated my skull.

I hope the govt of Lagos state rises to the call and do something urgently about the harassment, the harassment oftentimes is even a sexual harassment these idiots touch ladies offensively and vulgar words are used.

They get angry and insult the ladies when they don't buy or respond to their cat calls.

Let the Gov. House of assembly, market leaders, police and KAI environmentalist get together to act on this immediately.

We need sanity in our markets. They need to understand the right of customers...
