Lagos govt planning to remove 'Danfo' buses in Lagos, but says replacement won't cause Job loses

The Lagos State Government has earlier confirmed that plans are in motion to remove yellow buses, popularly known as Danfo, from Lagos roads for a more efficient and well-structured mass transportation system that would facilitate ease of movement.

Governor Ambode has also now clarified that there will be no job losses for the concerned danfo drivers involved, as they will be employed and trained to drive the new buses. According to him;

"If Lagos is to be globally competitive, we need to change the outlook of the way the city runs. What is of paramount interest to this government is that every Lagosian has a comfortable means of moving from one place to the other. But I promise you that they'll be no job losses.

The Governor is not interested in driving all the new buses. It is these bus drivers, the technicians, the mechanics that would also still be employed and trained to use the new buses. We are going to employ more people for the greater number of the buses and to make the city more beautiful and comfortable to all our workers."

To be candid, Ambode under two years had out performed his predecessors from 1999. Forget all the propagandas of laying foundations and another building on it. I think the foundation was on how to appropriate Lagos state as a personal estate, and by extensions the south West. But Ambode's signatures are everywhere and visible. But he must stop his war against churches. May God help him to do more

PLEASE HE SHOULD ALSO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THESE AGBEROS , THEY JUST THIEVES AND VIOLENT PEOPLE CAUSING TRAFFIC UP AND DOWN CUS OF 50 NAIRA . ITS REALLY SAD . THEN THEY SHOULD SIEVE ALL THE TOUTS TOO IN LASTMA OR SCRAP IT IF THEY REALLY WANT A BETTER LAGOS . BRT SEF ALL THEIR BRAKES NO DEY WORK . EVRY GOVERNOR SHA WANTS TO GET APPROVAL TO CHOP SMALL MONEY SHA

You will never understand the importance of structures because you live in a disorganized country. Imagine if Ambode had just started fixing all the roads and expanding them all so BRT can ply. Do you know how long it took? Do you know how long it took to order those buses and get the system running and training drivers. The man who is hired manager of UAC foods 50years after its formation will never appreciate the stress and the toiling to set up the company ( all the legal battles, incorporation, drawing up blueprints and businessplan, marketing campaigns). Lagos works because there is a blueprint. The plan to scrap buses precedes Ambode. Go and ask before you start hyping. Eko baje ti- newyorker

I am on the same page with you. Some of them are just being naive or simply do not know what a blueprint is. I have had cause to explain that the bus-stop expansion program at Iyana-Oworo end of the TMB (third mainland bridge) and Oworonsoki E/Way corridor is part of the Urban Renewal Scheme embedded in the Lagos Master Plan initiated in 1998/1999. The reason for the easy execution of the bus-stop expansion at Iysna-Oworo now, is that approval for modifications as it were, was less cumbersome given that APC is the central government who also controls the Federal Ministry of Works. It was unlike pre-May 2015 when another party held sway at the centre. Moving forward and understandably too, this will be the reason why Ambode's administration may be in a position to fix the 4th Mainland Bridge as all unnecessary bottlenecks arising from National Inland Waterways Authority which hitherto stalled construction will now be overlooked and action on ethical and professional issues will be expedited for the overall interest of the populace. Enough of politics in everything!

Chase away completely AGBERO'S or you give the AGBERO'S the new job,,,,since you have plans for the Danfo drivers, i think you should also have plans for the BUS OWNERS....

What do you mean, there will be no job loss?

You mean that taking away a mans business where he is his own boss and truning him to an employee where he now makes minmum wage is not job loss?

How about you give the buess to them free and they pay a small stipend for using the bus but still work their own hours and whenever they like and make their own money

Ambode's programme seems good only if Nigeria is in a developed arena. But since its not as someone already mentioned this will create huge unemployment thereby causing these people to become desperate by robbing, stealing or even rituals as we see in news every other day in Nigeria.
Its better for his administration to concentrate on the pollution caused by these buses. By decreeing that only buses 5-6yrs old is allowed to ply its trade on the road. This will not only reduce dangers faced by commuters everyday but reduce pollution as well. Also most importantly keep the danfo guys in a job. The UK and US have always had cabs, taxis, it's just regulated better. Govt alone cannot provide transportation for its citizens it's just not possible. Hence why private individuals go into this business as well.
I hope Ambode takes caution before he turns Lagos upside down. Not only that crime is not privy to only one location it can spill into other states as affected danfo drivers look for something to eat.
