"I don't see anything worth celebrating about a 13-year-old with a PhD" - Tolu Ogunlesi

Esther Okade made headlines in 2015 after a CNN report revealed that the British-Nigerian youngster was one of U.K's youngest college freshmen, after she enrolled at the Open University, a UK-based distance learning college, in January 2015 at the age of 10 and was on top of her class. See here

Twitter account, @BlackToLive, which celebrates anything concerning black excellence, shared a photo of Esther, with a caption; "Meet Esther Okade, a 12-year-old college genius who is set to earn her PhD by 2018".

However, Tolu Ogunlesi - Head of Digital Communication for the Nigerian President, says he doesn't see anything worth celebrating about this, asking what a 13-year-old would be doing with a PhD.

Its a great achievement and unbelievable. She is a genius. She has made history. Though She missed being a child. If I were her parent she would have gone through all the levels of schooling and enjoyed life with her peers. After PhD then what? I have been doing my PhD for about 5 years abroad and not yet done at 32. Imagine 13 years old girl to be done at the same time with me. Please Phd is not easy. She is a genius and should be celebrated.

HE IS RIGHT. THE GIRL HAS BEEN DENIED HER CHILDHOOD. SHE IS A GENIUS WHICH IS GOOD BUT SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO HAVE A NORMAL CHILDHOOD WITH GUIDIANCE

Anonymous said...

I concur....she should enjoy being a child...the time for grown up things will come.

Dear Tolu Ogunlesi, you wouldn't understand nor see the reason because you and your generation does not have such brain. Fool!

Augustine Israel said...

That's how low we can be...Things we place value on is absurd. Tolu can only see a sick, illiterate, uninformed, incompetent,over-eighty-year-old Buhari leading over 160million Nigerians as President, worth celebrating. Pathetic!

What would she be doing with it...
If she can have the brillance and mind to top a class that she probably the youngest ever, I'm very sure she would have a lot of ways to channel what she has been learning.
At your age you should celebrate the effort and brillance of that little girl even if (obviously) your IQ isnt close to hers.

Maybe she can donate it to ur principal; Buhari

Mamush said...

Inasmuch as i agree that she's way too young to own such high degree but what happened to the principle of 'make hay while the sun shines'. iam also of the opinion that we do not do things same way everybody is doing things. we differs not just in looks, biology but also personality. what works for Mr. A might not necessarily work for Mr. B. Who knows if that is her breaking point in life. I totally and completely rejoice with her and i wish her more success in life irrespective of my personal view of a child of that age should still be in secondary school or about to finish o'level.

But we parent shouldnt allow this be the yardstick we will use in measuring our children's success no matter how much we love or hate the idea.

Obinna Isaac said...

Enemies of Progress. Instead of peoples to celebrate such a rare brain, they are castigating her.
The MR Ogulesi I doubt he was even in secondary school stage 13. I doubt he has a PHD

I will celebrate the girl its not easy. It a record for Nigeria

So sad to hear such comment from someone like Tolu..... He should know better. Nothing worth celebrating a genius but is worth celebrating some group of people locked up in an apartment in South Africa doing nothing in the name of BBnaija

Tolu has a very very strong point. However, watch a herd of our shallow-minded citizens flock in here to call Tolu a 'hater' now.

Anonymous said...

Exactly! You will still have to wait many years for your mates and waiting is not fun..depression and destruction can come in.

Anonymous said...

I am curious.....

An international news media, CNN, presented a news item on this modern genius with a Nigerian heritage. The UK government is quick to acknowledge and celebrate her great achievements. And in typical fashion, the myopic Tolu Ogunlesi, an offshoot of this backward-thinking Nigerian government in power that fails to celebrate pure excellence devoid of political drama, would rather that this outstanding young achiever, Esther Okade, be from Senegal. Esther Okade may well be this generations Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, or Archimedes. Deal with that Tolu Ogunlesi!!!

I wonder if Tolu Ogunlesi would have openly and shamelessly said this if this young achiever were HIS OWN DAUGHTER??? Shame on you Tolu Ogunlesi! A BIG SHAME!!!

Well may b na d girl write dictionary,nd u dat u re talking abt some1 achievement which 1 u don get so dat pple can celibrate u #iranu

Then you're both fools.
Sadly.

She's achieved a great height.
She's to be encouraged to apply that knowledge and make her folks proud.

But tolu and osinanl are just jelly

Anonymous said...

He's absolutely correct... What's there to celebrate? Taking her childhood away from her? Oh please!

Anonymous said...

Exactly it doesnt make sense allow kids be kids teen be teen and adults be adults dont turn a child to adult overnight

Addy said...

Maybe he should ask his father that if he has one! Children who get encouraged from young age tend to be great and focused in life.

Anonymous said...

Today's world is all about celebration of 'anything' relevant or not! And she will earnvthe degree from home!

Tpy said...

People will attack the guy now just because he is Buhari's aide not for any other reason. Nigerians now think like donkeys. Anyway i agree with him totally. No matter how smart my kids are, I doubt i'll let them skip more than 2 classes. You not only have to achieve academic excellence , you also have to achieve maturity in the process. Imagine if you have phd at 14 then what will you be doing at 34?

Anonymous said...

Nigerians sha...just because you haven't experienced something or can't comprehend it, doesn't mean you shouldn't celebrate it...people like this are geniuses ...it's not just a case of being extremely bright and being ahead of your classmates or skipping one or two classes...people like this are rare and she'll never be fulfilled just being a regular teenager...her brain is operating at a higher frequency than average

Stop the noise! I have known Tolu for many years. Tolu Ogunlesi as a 13 year old could be called a genius himself because he won several awards and medals in all subjects. Tolu got several double promotions when we were mates in primary school (Abokuta Ogun State) and by the time those of us who started primary 1 with him got to primary 4 he was already in secondary school. Tolu Ogunlesi knows and has personally experienced the path that this 13year old girl is on. And so I make bold to say Tolu Ogunlesi's comments on this will not only be valid and true but it will be a good thing for the parents of any child on this path to take seriously. My final words: When a genius says there is nothing to celebrate about what another genius has achieved, the rest of us should ask why he said and not stone him for saying so
