Housewife sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for stabbing hubby to death over "Baba Ijebu" in Lagos

An Ikeja High court today sentenced  29-year-old housewife, Onyinyechi Akunne, to seven years imprisonment for stabbing to death her 35-year-old husband, Abuchi Akunne, with a kitchen knife during an argument over lotto tickets known as “Baba Ijebu” at their apartment at No. 85, Idimu Road, Ejigbo, a suburb of Lagos on March 28th 2015.
The presiding judge, Justice Josephine Oyefeso, sentenced her to prison after she pleaded guilty to causing bodily harm to her husband as against the initial charge of murder. Justice Oyefeso rejected a clause in the plea bargain agreement where it was proposed that Akunne should serve a sentence of community service instead of a prison term.
“In view of the defendant’s pleading guilty, I hereby find her guilty of one-count charge of grievous bodily harm. I hereby sentence her to seven years in prison starting from the day she remanded in prison custody which was March 28, 2015,” Oyefeso said.
Before she pronounced the sentenced, Akunne’s counsel, Mrs P.O. Onu, asked the court to temper justice with mercy as Akunne was a mother to a one year-seven month old daughter.
“The defendant is a first-time offender, she is a mother of a toddler which she gave birth to while in prison custody. Her daughter is a year-and-seven months old, she still has a lot to offer to the society” Onu said.
Justice Oyefeso however ordered that Akunne's daughter who has been with her in prison since 2015, be transfered to her relatives once she is weaned.
The Lagos state prosecutor, Mrs C.K. Tuiyi-Carena, had told the court how Akunne killed her husband.
“On the day of the alleged murder, Onyinyechi was preparing a meal while Abuchi was sitting on a chair in their home looking at his “Baba Ijebu” lottery tickets. Angered by her husband’s action, Onyinyechi scolded him for his love for gambling and a fight ensued between them. She took the kitchen knife she was using to cut vegetables and stabbed her husband fatally in the chest. The stabbing inflicted a deep cut in Abuchi’s chest which led to excessive blood loss and his eventual death. The victim died before he could be taken to a hospital by Onyinyechi and concerned neighbours,” she said.
Akunne was pregnant when the offence was committed and she gave birth to a baby girl while in custody at the Kirikiri Female Prisons. Akunne's baby was in court when she was sentenced.

This is so sad. Emotions in a pregnant woman intensifies hence the anger. Am sure it wasn't intentional. If na man be d judge, she wud have served community terms buh fellow women hate each other. While some politicians are still looting and killing pple. God help us period

Well, given the circumstances of the incident, the judge should have considered her general emotional and mental state and give a community service sentence. The husband in this case was the aggressor, any way. With the look of things, the judge has somehow created more problems for the family rather than solving a problem even though she wanted justice served. Its a pity that some Nigerian jurists and law officers do not put into consideration the cause and effects of certain actions and decisions.Pity.Its the usual Nigerian cut and join judiciary.

Linda, apparently, when a woman stabs her husband now, it is not domestic violence anymore , it's almost justified just like you claim, your journalism is nauseous.

A lot of men are addicted to gambling, smoking, drinking, womanising and even drugs. I met s lady whose husband poured her the oil she was frying with on her. Domestic violence should be condemned no matter the gender. RIP to the dead. A waste of life of a young man.

7 years is too much for murder ? ....what the fuck is wrong with you ladies ?

I can't believe you are making an excuse for someone who killed her husband, but will declare hell on someone who beats his wife.

She is lucky. She should quickly serve her time and come out at least she has another time to live unlike the dead man.

Lol just negodu your statement. 'Some men can be annoying and a pain in ass'. So women are innocent of such abi? Men are aggressive by nature. So according to u, both men and women should act out their emotions now. So when next im in that state, I get angered by my wife's nagging, I should beat her black and blue. And when I get questioned like how u question gentry; I should say the hormones affected my reasoning and action. My dear call a spade a spade. If is guilty of the crime 7yrs is too small period!

hormonal imbalance is not an excuse for murder. she killed a man and there is no point making it look like the man's life does not matter.

I wonder what you would say if she was the one who got stabbed by the husband

Emotions is not an excuse to commit murder. Only insanity can be accepted as an excuse. Pls I better start having baby mamas instead of all dis murderers disguised as wives. Abeg she should be given life imprisonment bcos he was stabbed once after all the skye bank lady's husband was sentenced to death bcos d wife was stabbed multiple times. In fact, to me d guy must have been temporarily insane to stab his wife multiple times which should have set him free instead Joe Odumakin ensured he was given d death penalty. Pls where is Joe Odumakin in dis case abi dis one no be domestic violence? D guy dey parlour jeje dey forcast him games and d wife come quarrel am for dere. Why she no face d food wey she dey cook? Pls u women posting nonsense are just horrible. If d guy hammer now from d bet, she go commot give testimony for church say blessings don come abi?

But if it was a man that killed his wife now, your statement will change, and you'lyou'll be singing 'domestic violence' now, it is called 'hormones'. She got away with her crime, 7 yrs is nothing. No one has a right to take away life, because you can't create one. Well she will live with the stigma all her life, even her child, except she repent and gives her life to christ, then the blood of Jesus will wash off her murderous spirit.

In other words, it is good to kill right? So because she's a woman, she has the right to kill? Look at Mercy Aigbe that got beaten, everybody wants her husband's head for pepper soup, but a woman killed her husband and you all are saying this. Well when she comes out, probably you'll be her next victim

all the time, i just observe and read through this linda's blog. Read comments and laugh within me. Why the hell should i comment when you will see similar comments from others. Anyway, i cant but say something on this post.

I can tell you, this is the most disturbing, shocking, surprised post and comment i will ever read on LIB. How could you guyz justify killing on emotions???? so when your emotion tells you to kill you kill? one thing is, "we are sick citizen of Nigeria". most of us are insane, when a man beat talk-less of killing his partner, you will read bizzare comments like kill him, kill him, kill him just like they shouted on maria magdalene, now a woman kills her husband under whatever guise, and you all are ranting eeyah, "she doesnt mean to kill him". are you not sick?? If that man was your brother will your comment remain the same?
