Woman who attempted to commit suicide by jumping off Third Mainland Bridge arraigned in court

Mrs Taiwo Titilayo Momoh, who attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the Third Mainland Bridge was arraigned before an Ebute Metta Magistrate Court in Lagos on Monday.

It will be recalled that on March 24, a police patrol team rescued the 51-year-old textile trader after she tried to jump into the Lagoon. Momoh was in a taxi heading towards Oworonshoki when she told the driver to stop on the bridge, due to financial problems.

The accused was granted N500, 000 bail after she pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted suicide. The presiding Magistrate, Magistrate T. A. Elias also ordered the defendant to undergo psychiatric evaluation before her next court appearance.

Momoh was arraigned by the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID), Yaba, on a one-count charge of attempted suicide.

Part of the charge reads:
"That you Titilayo Momoh ‘f’ on the 24th day of March, 2017 at about 10:00 hours at Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos did attempt to commit suicide by jumping into the lagoon and thereby committed an offence under Section 235 Cap C17, Volume 3 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty.
Chief Magistrate Elias granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in the like sum, who must also show evidence of tax compliance. He ordered the defendant to submit herself to psychiatric evaluation and adjourned the case till June 1.

What kind of system do we run here. Aren't they compounding her situations, or are they asking her why she was hesitant in taking her life, are they trying to mock her? In sane climes, she would be given medical support, and also monitored. Even some would have set up a go fund for her support. Pls let her be!

Mental health is a disease condition just like physical impairment. You don't take a malaria patient to court because they vomited on third mainland bridge. square pegs in round holes everywhere you turn. where and who is the Lagos state health commissioner?

They are severely compounding her issues. The judge should be sacked.

On the Issue of the Woman who wanted to commit suicide in Lagos: A Call for Law Review. Imagine, a woman who was duped about 18 million Naira in 2015 and has many sleepless nights according to report, now wanted to commit suicide because of frustration. She was arrested only to be prosecuted under a particular Law that considers not the welfare of the victim. She has no more hope of recovering her lost. The Law did not search for the person who duped her. But we were told that if she is found guilty she may be sentenced to life imprisonment under a certain 1999 Nigeria Constitution. I think the Law should address how she can recover , not how she can be prosecuted. Please review this law; her family including children should be considered.

Hmmm I really lack words to describe our judicial system. This is a wrong time to be a Nigerian. The lady in question needs counseling and not what they are making her go through, she could still attempt to commit suicide, and what if she succeeds when she does? Will they arraign her corpse in court? Enough of this madness please.

Heyhey what's all this nah? She had problems funding her bills hence she tried to take her life. Her own life o not anyone's. If that be the case they should start from TBliss o or what is that his name again? Banky W friend cos he started it. We will not agree to this judgement. Madam don't agree with them. Crazy judge. Bunch of ignorant jokers! It's obvious all of you here are not seised of the laws you're governed by. Of course attempted suicide is an offence under the law. You cannot attempt to take your life, once the suicide attempt isn't successful, and you're caught, sorry you have to face the full wrath of the law. On a flip side, you want to die and leave us alone in this suffering, no way! Ko joo mehn!

Anonymous said...

You mean we now sue people for trying to commit suicide? This country is not what it should be and a lot of people need to be tutored. Suicidal people need help, not abuse. This is an abuse of humanity.

Anonymous said...

Ignorant Nigerians. It's actually a crime to attempt suicide.

Anonymous said...

Today, I totally give up on this country.

Anonymous said...

The purpose of laws is for societal order.in Nigeria at the moment it is a crime to take any life even your own life! That is the law!!! So she is being properly charged for attempted suicide, the question is if the police can diligently prosecute her to obtain a conviction. That's why lawyers joke that if you want to commit suicide you had better succeed, because then you will have broken the law but be dead and the police can't charge a dead man to court for killing himself.THAT'S THE LAW!!!!

HEY LINDA I KNOW YOU MIGHT NOT POST MY COMMENT BUT I WILL PUT IT FOR YOU TO READ OR YOU EVENTUALLY CHANGE YOUR MIND BUT MY POINT IS IN ALL CONSTITUTION OF ANY COUNTRY ALL OVER THE WORLD SUICIDE IS A CRIME AGAINST THE LAW CAUSE IF NOTHING IS NOT DONE TO CURB IT THAT WAY IT WILL CONTINUE NOW IT IS NOW LEFT FOR HER ATTORNEY TO FIGHT FOR HER ON THE GROUND OF INSANITY AND SHE WILL BE EVALUATED THAT WAY IT WILL REDUCE THE CRIME
