I agree completely

Stupid law being enforced by idiots. We have Politicians and other major thieves in public office and they are never picked up and charged to court this quickly. That woman should be councelled and reintegrated into the society rather than being charged with a possibility of life in prisonment.

Stupid idiot @ Reno.Hope he wunt blame PMB for this?when your pay master GEJ is a criminal with plenty atrocities he had committed.omooba

@reno why now? This has been in existence for long. Law is law and we should all follow the rule of law. It's the same everyehere so pls we should stop playing politics with every vital issue.

It is a brutal crime to be poor in Nigeria. They will show you no mercy. A pickpocket is burned or sent to prison while corrupt politicians who elope with our patrimony are celebrated by the poor, the rich and corrupt class and protected by the law. Religious and ethnic associationso have acquiesced and lost their moral bearing. We are left without values anymore.

Ok, so she get a out of jail on bail, goes home nd drinks poison and dies, then what? Someone who's depressed and needs psychological help,, instead of rehabilitating her, our most "caring" government detained her and is charging her for attempting to take her life so as to end her suffering, same suffering caused by the same government o.! I tire for this country, this is so crazy!!!!!

This goes out to show the mentality of the people that are ruling us.
Will they jail her if found guilty of trying to commit suicide or will they fine her?The police took her to court, charged her and a competent judge admitted that in his or her court.
God help this our country called Nigeria

While I agree that the idea of charging those who attempt suicide to court is simply counter productive and only drives them to ensure that the failed suicide is successful at their next attempt, Im totally disgusted that such is coming from Reno Omokri, the hypocrite who dined and wined with GEJ and didn't feel d law was archaic when it was in effect during his tenure, nor did he do anything to advice his godfather to push for a repeal or removal from our statute books. Abeg let this man just STF up.The more he talks, the more he frigging stinks

Jehny said...

True, such a person needs good counselling and support but does not stop it from being an offence under the criminal code. The question should be; what is it doing in the code in the first place? I guess the law wants everybody to suffer the suffer together!lol

Even though the constitution is against anyone taking his/her life, but do the government not kill her citizens? If I have no right to take my life, why would government kill any of her citizen for whatever crimes. And for a country like Nigeria, why the government is against you taking your own life, is for the simple fact that they want you to remain alive and pay your tax, for them to be able to see money to embezzlement

The woman needs help rather than complicating her life. People will not rally around her because the news did not reach CNN. If it did, we would have seen them running to her aid. I wish I had the resources to help her.

All of you are very stupid. In any country in d world attempted suicide is a crime punishable by the law so stop all this shallow, political shit you all are talking about. If they charge her it is very much following the law. Shey d doctor that jumped into the lagoon was poor? No be driver dey drive am when him jump? Don't blame suicide on poverty. Rich people commit suicide the most. And there are poorer people in Nigeria than that woman. For your information suicide cannot be solely based on poverty. Reno shit head , you're talking rubbish. Linda I know u don't agree with me and wount post this, but let me tell u, if the state government charges her to court it doesn't mean they would jail her. They can confine her to a psychiatric ward for a long time. Please let stop being petty. Pls. Suicide is a crime purnishable by law. Ok why is it that churches reject corpses of people that commit suicide? Abeg make Una park well jare

@ u calling reno stupid idiot from d look of things u are worst than him bcos u didn't connect with what's on ground. No be GEJ matter or criminal matter we dey discuss abt here abeg go back and read well

the way out is to remove that part from our law, this case might be sensitizing event towards that. but as it is now, you have to succeed at that suicide to escape prosecutions, attempted suicide is still a crime against the state.

Anonymous said...

and you want to remind them to go after him? you know they can still prosecute him anytime. attempted suicide is a crime against the state

Samuel Orisakwe said...

Mr no name I then give u a big fool, Attempted murder is a capital offence please, get a Lawyer for advice.

Law is not law, laws are guidelines, you don't put people in prison, because they're suffering from depression, in the civilized world, you get them psychological help.

Every life counts, why is it a woman that's being charged? Sexism

Anonymous said...

It's amazing and amusing why social media continues to turn things on its head. The law ought not be a respecter of any person, every person is equal before the law. The law in Nigeria today is that killing of a person by a person is homicide, the killing may be a person killing himself or killing another, that is a crime. So an unsuccessful suicide attempt is a failed attempt to kill, even if it is yourself. That is a crime!!
That is why she is being charged for attempting to killing a person (her self). That is why if you attempt suicide you had better succeed to escape trial. A successful suicide attempt is a homicide but sadly of a person on himself, consequently the police cannot charge a dead person for an offence of killing, that's why it is said , you better be sure you succeed in your quest to commit suicide.if we were Belgium where euthanasia is permitted there offence of attempted suicide. I pity the woman but that's the law, if the police failed to dcharge her they would be condoning a crime

Linda you have a platform. You have your blog and your studios. You have access to celebrities and news stations. If this news were in America there would be protests at the court house. You need to help her, do something. She needs help from people in the public eye, someone with a voice. Put the designer bags down and help

I can't just imagine the concept of justice passed in Nigeria. Instead of charging a such highly depressed mind to court, she should be taken to a HOME for COUNSELLING.

Anonymous said...

What!!?? Reno, did you really say this? Oh God! Get the hell ourra here pretty quickly!

Firstly, Suicide is an inchoate offense. That is to say, an uncompleted crime, an attempt. This crime is in section 327 of the criminal code of Nigeria and prescribes one year imprisonment for anyone who commits it. This law is still existing, has not been repealed, amended or expunged. Are you saying it should not be enforced? Is this not like saying that an armed robber, rapist or murderer caught at the planning stage, should be excused because he as not fully effected his plans? The one who successfully commits suicide is gone, has no criminal responsibility anymore. In so far as this law still exists, it has to be enforced. And Lagos state unlike other states is becoming a good example of a society with rule of law and enforcement of laws, such as you get in the US and other sane climes. Suicide is a crime in countries.

Secondly, things trend a lot in Nigeria, if the law is not enforced, daily, you will find bodies washing up the lagoons, rivers and canals, per follow-follow.

Thirdly, and I quote you, "failed suicide needs counseling support and understanding, so, you mean that the government should have paid off the woman's debt? Do you know how many millions of Lagos residents owe debts? Even Fayose with his deceitful 'stomach infrastructure' can he pay off individual debts of citizens?

As for the herdsmen, I'm pretty sure that if any herdsmen killing occurs in Lagos, the law will take its course, Lagos is not like Kaduna or other States where the governments condone crime.

Be you informed, even if Nigerians are seized with the worse case of forgetfulness or memory diseases such as dementia or Alzheimers, they wont forget that PDP was in government for 16 years and should have remedied that law you complain of.

Lastly Reno, you are a Lawyer, served in the last Government that was booted out. What did you do to try to amend or repeal this law that you now see as against the principles of Natural justice equity and good conscience?

My name: Chika

I can't just imagine the concept of justice passed in Nigeria. A seriously depressed mind should be taken to a HOME for counselling rather than charging the woman to court. I can see this as adding more salt to her injury.
Those who stole our commonwealth are walking freely while someone who attempted suicide would be commuted to life imprisonment.
Everything turning upside down in Nigeria.

Chika TBH, you could have come out with something clever or at least be constructive in your opinion, my former neighbour jumped off the bridge the other day, he was rich had a good career, but he suffered severe depression, my question to you is this, had he survived do you think the best thing to do is to put him on trial for suffering from depression??.

What law? The judge must be high on something, what if she goes home and drink otapiapia, she needs encouragement at this time. This government has made a lot of people to give up on life. Our so called leaders don't care about the poor. Stupid judgement.

Hmmmm, am really shocked at the way a lot of Nigerians think. It is so so sad that most of us do not seem t realise that what is bad, is bad. Irrespective of who does it. The common thing in this country is, once it is pointed out that someone does something bad, we bring politics into it and try to excuse the act. Anonymous 21.41 who say suicide being a crime is the same law everywhere? Please where else in the world is it a crime? As for Anonymous 21.51 and 06.51, you are just both pathetic!!! Yes, Reno is pointing it out now and did not say anything when GEJ was in power because, we never heard about one who attempted suicide being charged to court during that time. The truth is there are a whole lot of stupid barbaric laws and rules in the Nigerian Constitution and Criminal Code that the lay person might not get to know about until it is to be enforced. A good question was asked above: why was Teebliz not charged to court? This woman, was trying to kill herself because she had financial issues yet, she was arraigned to court and asked to bring N500,000 as bail. Is this not the sickest situation ever?

Has it even occurred to you all that this woman's case is being treated this way because the law enforcement officers, after due investigations, are convinced what she did was just a sham???? Apparently, this woman does owe her suppliers (the circumstances of these debts are another cause for concern) but she is not poor by any means. Her shop is still fully stocked and her son is also in same business with fully stocked warehouse of goods for sale. What she did was a stunt to gain sympathy and avoid paying her debts and THAT IS WHAT IS WRONG!!! If she is not punished for this, many others will toe her line to avoid paying their debtors. She really did not want to jump, she was just posturing and unfortunately, no one is sympathetic to that. She is making a mockery of those who are truly emotionally and psychologically disturbed and this should not be acceptable in anyway. We all have problems but by the grace of God, we will overcome them in more humane ways.

Shulaye Roy said...

I totally agree with him...She needs help!!

in civilized countries, suicide is not a crime. Instead they take them to psychological homes to help them. No one is asking the government to pay her debts but taking her to court and asking for 500k bail is adding fuel to the fire. That is no solution. These civilized countries decriminalized suicide as far back as 1960s, 1970s; only assisted suicide is illegal.
Nigeria needs a lot of amendments to her laws.

Very correct, and again who are d causes of our depression nd frustration in Naija? no be our leaders nd politicians, if they dont open dollar/poundsterling apartment banks in dea different homes nd embezzle all d fortunes dat belong to all d citizens, we wont be having cases of suicide, prostitution, dirty deeals all in d name of answers to our problems, they shld open a suicide rem.homes where they councel them, release our money to generate jobs, share d national cake and believe me, dea will be fewer cases of suicide or even none.

Remo , I have been indifferent about you all along but today i can conclude that you are dim . Attempted sucide is a crime any where in the world and it acts as a determent to others . So it is not okay to kill another person but it is okay to kill one's self . hiss u are so dull . Attempted sucide and attempted carry the same weight
