Lagos State Government seals off Tony Rapu’s church

The Lagos State Government has allegedly approved the sealing of a Lekki-based Church, christened ‘The Dome’ in Lekki Phase 1, for violating building regulations. The church which is headed by popular pastor, Dr. Tony Rapu. According to a statement by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Anifowoshe Abiola, the owners of the church contravened the Lagos State Regional and Urban Planning Law 2010 by building without title documents and necessary building permits.
The commissioner stated that the church had no Planning permit to construct the building adding that the fence of the church fence was in the right of way of Freedom Road (which is currently under construction) and also directly under the high-tension wires.

The statement reads in part:
“While government appreciates citizens’ rights to freedom of worship, the law stipulates a minimum of 15meter setback from the high tension wire to the property line. This church neglected and has refused to comply with the Statutory Notice served, as such the State Government must protect its citizens in order to mitigate against avoidable disasters.”
The statement further said that the government has given a 30-day ultimatum to owners/developers of buildings without planning permit to comply with the state planning laws to avoid sanction.

It emphasized the government’s position against illegal development of buildings and warned owners against building without planning approval.

Why would the government fight a church that is helping the community? When the local government was silent, the church supported the Itedo community and has been doing so for years. It stinks of self interest and politics.

What right of way are they talking about. Freedom way which by the way was named by the church was not even in existence. The church did the road and opened it up before the Government took over the repairs. Why play politics against the church??

Pastor Tony Rapu is doing a great work, Lagos state Government should leave him alone

Pastor Tony is one of the greatest reformers of our time!! Why should the Government fight him?

I refuse to believe that the same Tony Rapu who is relentlessly rehabilitating prostitutes and drugs addict in Lagos state without any publicity stunt is being persecuted by the same Lagos State

Since when did sealing become news worthy? This is a game of using negative media attention to mount pressure on organisations. It is all shades of wrong! Or is it now part of Lagos Laws to be announcing sealing of properties? I smell foul play!

It is so sad to see that the government who claims to protects its citizens against any disaster is intending to close down a church who has done more for lagosians than any government will ever do. Pastor Tony preaches and does the word of God. Recently, he left his comfort zone in Lagos and went all the way to kaduna to share not just the word but food, drinks, toiletries, basic daily needs to people who he doesn't pastor over. Name one spiritual father that will do that, I'll tell you, its pastor Tony. The government should refrain from such political gamble and give the church the space and absolute freedom it needs to thrive in the city.

This is an utter witch-hunt. I recall church members personally volunteered their time, money and manpower, to clear the debris that was an utter eyesore, and start the construction of the supposed "Freedom Way". Where was the State government then? That church has done more in charitable endeavours the State government. It should be applauded and further encouraged by the State, not vilified in this manner.

Wrong publicity. I am currently at the premises and they just finished a women's bimonthly breakfast meeting and everything looks very normal. However the neighboring church is where I see the Lagos state official having some sort of arguments back and forth. Dear Linda, it's sideways nice to get actual facts and not them say..then say kinda thingy.

That church has been there since I moved to Lekki almost 14 years ago. They were in the bush! They brought development to Itedo community. No organization including the government has had a bigger impact on the development of that area. Lagos State don't bite hands that fed you o

Tony Rapu has lost his way. He is caught up in fame and riches. He has lost his heart for the gospel. Retrace your steps or bigger doom awaits you.

This is bullshit... Just reading the story... Please, how long has the church been standing that they just realized all this? If roads that were planned for years had been done, instead of the money being stolen and spent, would they just be realizing all this? This is personal. Maybe the man no gree settle them. They should leave him and his church alone. Typical government bullshit. Take them to court and let them prove all the accusations. God will deal with them sha... No need to waste money on lawyer.
