Graphic photos: Over 30 football fans electrocuted in a viewing center in Calabar

Over 30 football fans watching the UEFA Europa League football quarter-final match between Manchester United and Anderlecht lost their lives in an electrocution tragedy which happened at a viewing center in Nyahasang, Atimbo Calabar, Cross River state last night.

According to reports, a transformer near the viewing center fell which caused one of the high tension cables attached to the transformer to fall on the zinc of the viewing center building. At least 30 people died from the electrocution while the few that survived were badly burnt and have been taken to Cross River state Teaching hospital. May their souls rest in peace. Amen. More pics after the cut..

What sad news on a beautiful Friday.
The urgent need to shelve my anticipated weekend Hang-Out in Mourning mood fashion has never been more pertinent than now.

May the Beautiful Souls of the Dearly Departed Rest in Perfect Peace (RIPP).

Rip. If there was light and they had money to buy cable, then stay at the comfort of their homes to watch the match his tragedy wouldn't have happened.

If only we Nigerians will learn how to be cautious. How can someone build anything under or near a transformer and people sit in it and feel comfortable watching a game. I can't believe us abeg. I know govt will be blamed for this one too.

It's possible that the transformer has shown sign of falling before it's finally fell, Just like one wooding electric pole at my area in lagos that is bent over for more than 3years now. Lack of maintenance culture is killing Nigeria. God save us.

I do agree that it was very wrong to build a structure close to such facility but at the same time,i believe there are government officials in charge of preventing or removing such anomaly. We all should be proactive. It is quite sad that as much as 30 people will die and status quo remains. It is as if we are waiting for the next tragedy to occur

Who is in charge of that transformer and why did it fall? When we start holding people accountable such things won't happen. In a civilized society that person would be in jail for this

Chigozie Obialor said...

This is due to failure of PHCN in Complying with standard Health and Safety rules.

Chigozie Obialor said...

It was an accident, until it is investigated we can come to conclusions.

God!!! This is heartbreaking! Beautiful souls destroyed by pples irresponsibility. If u investigate u will find out, that the transformer that exploded may hv given several warning signs. Yet nothing was done. And I find it hard to understand that humongous gathering to watch football, heh?!! even with pple who hv dstv at home. My brothers are case in point. God pls deliver us. Highly unnecessary!!!

Please explain this statement "a transformer fell"... Fell from where? What is hanging somewhere? Was it on the ground and tipped over somehow?

CHERYL (aka FROM GLORY to GLORY) said...

RIP. Sad that some of them have dstv and gotv at homes but decided to watch outside.
