Nigerian Army detains 6 soldiers over Ikorodu lady who was allegedly brutalized by soldiers

The Nigerian lady who was allegedly brutalized by soldiers on Sunday (read here) may get justice soon, as the Nigerian Army has released a statement regarding the incident. On its Facebook page, the Nigerian Army stated that there is an ongoing investigation into the allegation and that 6 soldiers have being detained in regards to the incident. Read the statement after the cut...

ALLEGED CASE OF BRUTALLIZATION BY SOLDIERS
1. The attention of Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army has been drawn to the social media and Newspapers online reports on “Alleged brutalization of a female by soldiers”. The incident occurred in Odoguyan, Ikorodu area of Lagos state involving soldiers of 174 Battalion on Sunday 12 March 2017.

2. The alleged incident is highly regrettable, even as the Division under the Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for inhuman treatment. Discipline remains the bedrock of the Nigerian Military Profession. It is quite disheartening when such incidences occur even though isolated will not be treated with any laxity.
Consequently, a Board of Inquiry has been constituted by the Commander 9 Brigade, Brigadier General Elias Attu to investigate the circumstances that led to the incident, determine the level of the soldiers involvement, submit its findings and recommend appropriate disciplinary measures which will be communicated.
The female has been taken to hospital where she is responding to treatment while 6 soldiers are being detained in regards to the incident.

Gentlemen of the press, may I thank you for your timely information in bringing such incidences to fore. The Division remains committed to its tasks as part of the constitutional mandate of the Nigerian Army. It continues to enjoin all to be law abiding and count on their support and cooperation.

You are please requested to disseminate the information to the general public.
OM DAUDU
Lieutenant Colonel

Good thing the nig army always respond and to redeem their image back buh why these soldiers won't take heed to the fact that their heads will always act an discipline them when dey do wrong is disappointing. Is it the excessive discipline they procured during their training or they dnt value humans dat makes dem act stupidly? I am nt understanding. Pls they shod b dealt with and update given to d public. As a member of the United States armed forces,I have never witnessed or heard of such incidents by the United States military forces rather they are always willing to help and always appreciated by the public, they are treated with so much dignity,if discharged dishonorably your career is finished in the United States even Ma Donald's wouldn't employ you. I think the Nigerian military men needs to be put under check, why the abuse of power unnecessarily, why would beat your fellow human being like that a woman for that matter, they have no right to even beat anyone,I read the story of physically challenged man that was beaten for wearing a camouflage pants,in the states u you see people wearing camouflage from head to toe and they've never harassed by anyone but there's a distinction between the military uniforms and those worn by people, this can also be done in naija. The senate has to do something about the military boys terrorizing the masses, this needs to stop!

The timely response of the Nigerian Army to this shameful incident is noted. However, their are some inaccuracies in this statement.
1. This is not an isolated incident, brutalization of civilians by soldiers is happening all the time, its just that social media now exposes more than before.
2. Nigerian Army has not demonstrated zero tolerance to civilian brutalization of civilians by its men. Zero tolerance is not by words but by action. The Army must take concrete and visible action to re-orientate its men on their relationship with civilians. Most soldiers have a sense of godlike superiority to civilians and they look down on civilians like scum. The soldiers must be taught to respect human rights enshrined in the constitution and if they cannot they should not be walking around on the streets as in most advanced countries you can't find soldiers just walking around in public. The highest level of the Army needs to make an unequivocal public policy statement on soldier/civilian relationship and hold soldiers accountable otherwise it the brutalization will continue.
Soldiers can arrest offending civilians but they must hand such civilians over to the police which is the lawful institution empowered to handle offenders. They are not to assault, beat, terrorize, brutalize and dehumanize civilians.

My advise is stay away from Soldiers trouble as much as it depends on you. I always try to avoid them even when I know am right. It is not that am stupid or a coward but in this country who cares? They could kill you and nothing will happen and even if anything happens would it bring you back to life or make you walk again if you are crippled. May be we will get there one day when soldiers will see their profession as just any other one which they voluntarily decide to choose and don't consider themselves as being superior to other folks just because they carry guns, but until then I plead with all of us "ordinary" and bloody folks to avoid these guys. They are bunched of state trained killers anyway.

😀 Every time we condemn 10 bad soldiers out of 100,000 we have, we should remember to encourage more good work from the army leadership that quickly apoligized to us and quuckly punish the bad soldiers
